The Professional Educators’ Union (PEU) joins the Nation in wishing the Matric Class of 2020 good luck as they prepare for their oncoming final examinations.
Indeed, the academic year of 2020 is in everyone ‘s wish list that it can quickly pass and be forgotten, as it has been a difficult one by any standard. The pandemic caught South Africa and the world-over off-guard and disproportionately disrupted the academic year ,thereby ushering in pessimism to many learners and parents, with many having thrown-in the towel and abruptly abandoned their endeavour and pursued to their studies. But against all odds, this time has finally come to be realised and it is our fervent hope and belief that our learners are combat ready to sit for their examinations.
Praises and accolades should at this point in time be showered to Minister Angie Motshekga for having followed the courage of her own convictions, in galvanising all stakeholders to rally behind the move to re-open schools at a time when everyone was still gripped with the paralysing fear that came with COVID-19. Thanks to the tenacity by teacher Unions , in their oversight role of ensuring that provinces do comply with the eight cardinal pillars for safety measures against the pandemic, which has undoubtedly went a long way in insulating the depilating effects of COVID-19 on our teachers and learners .
PEU also wish to sing praises to teachers in general and her members in particular, for their bravery, selflessness and sacrifices they made in occupying the frontline position, to deliver on their mandate and fiduciary duties of serving the nation. Their tireless efforts and the quest to see it that our learners become fully prepared to sit for the examinations did not go unnoticed. Thanks, should also go to our dear parents and communities, for the unqualified support they continuously gave teachers and learners during the difficult time and moment of uncertainty.
PEU is alive to the fact that the Department will, for the first time in their history, be administering the National Senior Certificate Examination to over a million candidates, which is not only unprecedented but also demanding extra resources for effective management. Flowing from DBE ‘s assurance that it is all systems go for the matric examinations, PEU wish to reiterate the call for maximum security and hawkish vigilance, to ensure that no leakages of papers and timeously delivery of all examination material, in order to preserve the standard and credibility of our examinations.
We call upon our teachers to continue to give support to our learners until the last moment.
