News Hub Creator 04/6/2020

I was having a chat with a friend who works with a corporate outfit on the island, and her comments about the effects of Corona Virus (COVID-19) is best described as unthinkable. According to her, the firms around there have started laying off workers, even her own firm have layed off some members of staff as a result of the stay at home directive by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

It will be an unprecedented atmosphere indeed after the COVID-19 is eventually defeated because it would have left behind a benign effects on the labour market increasing unemployment by an unimaginable percentage.

The state of things currently is not as bad as many are circulating it to be online and on some social media handles. Some persons have decided amidst the pandemic to create fear by conjuring up reports of untrue happenings putting the entire country in panic.

However, as the government is fighting the scourge, there is need to equally prepare for the eventualities of the pandemic. For instance, the effects will be more devastating in third world countries owing to the fact that there were no infrastructure for sustainable development prior to the outbreak of the pandemic.

For a country like Nigeria, the government needs to first develop a practicable approach to solve the pandemic because the rise in the number of infected persons in the country keeps soaring on a daily basis which gives room for great concerns as a member of the nation.

According to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) the number of infected persons have gone beyond 200 and the number keeps increasing. So there is need for the government to develop a blueprint to first put a stop to the spread of the pandemic and then accepts all the help it can get from developed nations who are willing to extend a hand of help to fight the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the fight against the pandemic is not as important as preparing for the eventualities of the COVID-19 on the nation. Currently, the compulsory lock down has made the economy of Nigeria dropped drastically, that's in addition to the drop in the price of crude oil in the international market.

The center of this article is the fact that there will be a huge rise in unemployment after the COVID-19 pandemic reason been that, many businesses will shutdown after the pandemic, a lot of firms will downsize to maximize the available resources, many will be demoted to accommodate the firm's available funds.

The downsizing will practically affect the entire aspects of Nigeria economy, from unemployment, per capita income even the standard of living in the country will be greatly impaired.

So, to avoid the impending difficulty, the government can start to develop plans to manage the outcomes and the effects of the corona virus pandemic. So that a succour can be provided for the average Nigerian after the pandemic.
