Is Joe Igbokwe Right to Criticize the Reception that the President Accorded to Femi Fani-Kayode?

News Hub Creator 09/19/2021

The Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Drainage and Water Resources, Joe Igbokwe, Is an unhappy man at the moment.

The staunch defender of President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) is sad at the reception that President accorded to an erstwhile Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK as his supporters call him), who recently defected to the APC.

He is on record to have said some of the most unsavory and unprintable things about the President and the APC. He criticized them at every opportunity and once declared that he would rather die than join the party, which he termed a gathering of darkness.

Igbokwe took to his Facebook page to express his displeasure at the turn of events in the party in the past few days. The unapologetic APC chieftain has been using the same social media tool to aggressively promote the cause of both Mr. President and the party and to trash the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Igbokwe's unhappiness, therefore, derives from the fact that neither the President nor the party has deemed it fit to grant people like him a red-carpet treatment as it did to Femi Fani-Kayode, who he referred to as an enemy.

Recall that the President personally received the former Minister of Aviation at the Presidential Villa on Thursday, September 16, 2021, as the latter jumped parties for the umpteenth time to team up with the ruling APC. View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

However, that reception has not gone down well not just with Joe Igbokwe but also with a host of other party stalwarts.

A former Minister of Sports during Buhari's first term in office, Solomon Dalong, has also voiced out his disappointment about the Fani-Kayode’s reception by the party and the President.  View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

A Political Adviser to the President, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, described Thursday, September 16, as the ‘saddest day of his political career!'

A few other party men have also bared their minds on the matter.

But Igbokwe has been by far the most vocal of the party faithful on the issue. View pictures in App save up to 80% data. To be fair to these loyal and committed party members, their feelings and opposition to FFK's defection and reception by the President are quite understandable, considering his antecedents.

Igbokwe, therefore, is somewhat right to feel particularly hard done for not getting his due reward for years of faithful albeit man-pleasing service to the party. He has a right to lament that he has not got the recognition he thinks he deserves for his work for the party and the President.

According to his series of posts since Thursday, he is not even asking for too much. Just a presidential invitation to Aso Rock and a well-done-faithful-servant handshake!

A laborer deserves his wages, or don’t you think so? If that is true, then certainly Igbokwe is not asking for too much.

In his post on Thursday, the loyal party man wrote in part:

"Despite all my push for APC, Abuja has not given me a phone call, talk less of inviting me for a coffee with C-in-C."

In another post the following day, Friday, Igbokwe hinted that the event has put his loyalty to the party to the test.

He again made a post in which he urged the party to 'learn consequence management', adding that indiscipline and impunity can destroy a nation.

To buttress that argument, he followed up the previous post with screenshots of FFK's uncharitable comments about the APC and the President in the past.

In yet another post, the Bola Tinubu core loyalist disclosed that many APC foot soldiers are feeling that the party does not appreciate them despite the backlash they face for their unflinching loyalty and support to its cause.

He wrote:

"A laborer deserves his pay. Reward hard work and the people will do more."

The former APC Publicity Secretary in Lagos State, however, emphasized that he was not complaining about the party’s unfair treatment for himself but for fellow core party loyalists like him who are not getting the recognition that they rightly deserve.

He wrote:

“Please I am okay where I am today but I know countless APC diehards who are 100 percent better than FFK. Nobody has remembered them. Not even a recharge card, not even a bottle of coke, not even thank you.”

Although Igbokwe is right in pouring out his feelings on the Fani-Kayode defection brouhaha, I think he is approaching it the wrong way. His approach gives him away as a man-pleaser and someone who was only loyal to the party in the hope of getting a reward for his efforts.
