On Thursday this week, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, received a former Minister of Aviation and chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Femi Fani-Kayode alias FFK, in Aso Rock to officially welcome the latter into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
FFK's latest switch of parties makes it the fourth time that the maverick politician would be changing political camps between the two major parties in the past decade! View pictures in App save up to 80% data.
He started with the PDP where he rose to become a minister under former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.
When the APC emerged in 2013, FFK was one of the early members, having made the switch from the PDP. By 2014, however, he was back in the PDP.
It is no longer news, that the former PDP chieftain has made yet another switch back to the APC as we speak. View pictures in App save up to 80% data.
But during his recent sojourn in the PDP, FFK made himself a thorn in the flesh of the ruling APC.
He was the most staunch and acerbic critic of the ruling party and President Mohammadu Buhari. He deployed very unsavory and unprintable language in his criticisms. He spared neither the party nor the President.
He once described the APC as a Janjaweed party about the militia group that operates in western Sudan and eastern Chad. He also referred to the party as the Muslim Brotherhood, a terrorist group in Egypt, when it muted the idea of featuring a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2015 Presidential elections. It was either an emphasis on the party’s plan to Islamize the country or the President’s plan to ‘Fulanize’ it.
He churned out several damaging write-ups against the President and his party, especially via his social media handles. For his efforts, he gained several hundreds of thousands of followers and supporters.
FFK automatically extended a hand of fellowship to any individual or group who openly opposed Buhari and the APC, irrespective of the individual’s or group’s pedigree. He was friends with Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB, just to spite the President as it were.
At one point, the former minister described the APC as darkness. He vowed that he would rather die than join the party.
In a series of tweets back then, he wrote in part:
“The suggestion that l joined the APC is false and insulting. Those that are peddling this fake news should bury their heads in shame. From what we have witnessed, l would rather die than join a filthy, rat-infested sinking ship like the Almajiri People’s Congress (APC).
“I am committed to opposing the APC and those that are in their ranks for the rest of my natural life and I will NEVER join them no matter what! They are nothing but darkness whilst l stand for the light of God and truth: there can be NO fellowship between light and darkness.”
Things got so seeming bad and personal that in February this year, the Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum, Dr. Salihu Lukman, issued a statement in which he said that the party would compromise on its integrity to accept a personality like FFK, who he likened to a terrorist, into its fold.
But today, a few months down the line, the eccentric FFK is back with the APC! View pictures in App save up to 80% data.
What is more, the party accorded the man an executive reception! The same President, who until a few weeks back was a target of FFK’s acerbic verbal attacks, personally received the latter into the ruling party in the nation’s seat of power, the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
And the man has been singing a different tune ever since that official switch on Thursday.
He now praises the APC and the President for their great strides towards nation-building. He says God instructed him to defect to the APC to join hands with the President to move the nation forward on the path of prosperity.
That the President officially received FFK into the APC by granting him an audience in Aso Rock is telling of the heart disposition of Nigerian politicians when it comes to politicking.
Even though they appear to fight dirty in the public, deep down in their heart of hearts, they are neither great enemies nor friends but people pursuing individual interests. What we see outside are clashes of such interests. Where such interests do not clash, they readily close ranks to achieve their common goals!
Nigerians should take a cue from the heart disposition of these politicians and learn never to destroy one another when they (the politicians) bring in religious, regional, and ethnic dimensions into national issues to score cheap political points. It is the age-long divide-and-rule strategy of the elite to confuse the rest of us. We should not fall for their antics any longer.
