News Hub Creator 01/18/2020

2019 was a fun-filled year for most Nigerians; it is a year full of life transforming events. Nigeria like most people know her is a nation full of surprises and events that commands world attention year in year out but 2019 left so much memories that cannot be forgotten in a jiffy.

A lot of events shaped 2019; from entertainments, politics, court cases, elections to many other major events that put Nigeria once again on world radar. But in all of these things there are some of the events that are worth a cursory look.

The political sphere was full of drama as the year commenced amidst election frenzies, the results of the election leading to several court cases, the electoral tribunal had its hands full with allegations upon accusations and most importantly the drama that trailed the presidential elections results between the two major political parties in Nigeria, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that event had tags on the social media which remained a trending tag till the case ended in the Supreme Court.

Not to mention the drama brought by the fracas between the convener of #RovolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore and the Department of State Service (DSS), the case in court, his trials, detention, the clamour for his release, protests, intervention of the international community and so on also spiced up 2019.

For instance, the entertainment industry in Nigeria was given another face lift as a Nigerian got Grammy Awards nomination. As if that was not enough, major Nigeria entertainers took major steps, some came out of the closet; confirmed the rumours surrounding their relationships (wizkid and Tiwa Savage), others addressed the social media frenzies pressuring them to be what they are not. Many others got closer to their spouses like never before (Davido and Chioma).

Do not also forget that, 2019 was the year Nigeria cross-dresser, Bobrisky took the bold step of having his long awaited surgery procedure which finally puts him in the feminine circle after he had breast implant and other procedures like liposuction that made him more than 80% woman.

In all of the frills and thrills that characterized 2019, one particular event seemed to remain the talking point even months after the event had taken place which makes it my biggest event in 2019. The event is the visit of Cardi B to Nigeria for the first time in history.

Cardi B, a Grammy Award-winning rapper stormed Nigeria with so much frenzies that made Nigeria and Nigerians feel chills right in their spines they have never felt in a while. The Cardi B’s visit immediately took over the social media as it trended for the periods she was in Nigeria and she even kept trending days after she left the country and also the terrestrial media weren’t in the back seat as reports upon reports kept rolling in about her arrival and her performance at the show in Lagos.

Why did I think the Cardi B’s visit to Nigeria is my biggest event that shaped 2019? The reason is not farfetched. The glamour that surrounded her visit to Nigeria got a lot of people talking; some social commentators asked why her visit was so important that many abandoned their schedules just to be a part of the talking points.

Interestingly, what really got a lot of social media users talking were her subsequent posts on her Instagram page where she confessed she was missing Nigeria already not long after she left. To cap it all, she once again broke the internet after she announced she was going for her application to become a Nigerian citizen.

One of the major reason I considered her visit to Nigeria as my biggest 2019 event is the fact that her visit and how she promoted her Nigeria experience has encouraged other artistes to want to visit the Nigeria many condemned as a no go area.

Popular music artistes such Lil Wayne has come out to say that one of his top priority country to visit anytime soon is Nigeria. Many others also have shown interest in Nigeria since the Cardi B experience in Nigeria.

Another notable rapper, Drake has also included Nigeria in his six-city tour Africa visit in March. You see why Cardi B’s visit is the biggest event that shaped 2019 now?
