Femi Fani-Kayode Is A Typical Nigerian Politician

Femi Fani-Kayode alias FFK needs no introduction in Nigerian politics. This is because the maverick politician has been around the Nigerian political arena for quite a while now. But much more than that is the fact that the former Minister of Aviation in the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo is a controversial figure.

The man thrives in controversies. Nigerians also know him for his frequent change of political parties like a chameleon would change the color of its skin to adapt to its environment.

The man has changed parties again! View pictures in App save up to 80% data. He switched yet again from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Party (APC) just yesterday. In the last decade, FFK has switched between the two prominent parties four times! He was in PDP during the Obasanjo regime where he was a minister.

He was one of the early members of the APC when the party came into being in 2013, having made the switch from the PDP. But by 2014, he was back to the PDP for the second time.

His stay in the PDP, from then till his latest switch to the APC, was quite eventful. He became a formidable mouthpiece and something of the most recognizable face of the PDP even though he had no official position in the party.

FFK was one of the most ardent and vitriolic critics of the APC and President Mohammadu Buhari, perhaps only outdone by the former governor of Ekiti State, Peter Ayo Fayose. View pictures in App save up to 80% data. He described the APC and the President in the most unsavory language possible.

He was one of the first persons to describe the APC as a Janjaweed party—a reference to the militia group that operates in western Sudan and eastern Chad or the Muslim Brotherhood, a terrorist group that operates in Egypt.

Barely two years ago, in October 2019, FFK described the APC as darkness and declared that he will rather die than join the party. He said this when there were speculations that he had switched alliance to the party. He also described the party as a sinking ship, adding that it was an insult to be associated with the party.

Here is how he puts it in his words:

“The suggestion that l joined the APC is false and insulting. Those that are peddling this fake news should bury their heads in shame. From what we have witnessed, l would rather die than join a filthy, rat-infested sinking ship like the Almajiri People’s Congress (APC).

“I am committed to opposing the APC and those that are in their ranks for the rest of my natural life and I will NEVER join them no matter what! They are nothing but darkness whilst l stand for the light of God and truth: there can be NO fellowship between light and darkness.”

FFK had become such a pain in the neck of the APC that in February this year, the Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum, Dr. Salihu Lukman, issued a statement in which he said that the party would not play down on its integrity by accepting personalities like FFK into its fold.

The DG likened FFK to terrorists like Abubakar Shekau and Nnamdi Kanu and vowed that the party would never for any reason accept such persons into its fold.

Dr. Lukman stated pictures of FFK and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, who doubles as the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC, and Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State surfaced online when the former minister going around to meet with some APC chieftains preparatory to his eventual defection to the party.

But here we are today, FFK is in the APC!

Speaking with journalists after he met with President Buhari yesterday, FFK who had canvassed for the impeachment of the same Buhari two years ago, declared that his defection was God-ordained and that he felt it was time for him to join hands with the President to move the country forward.

He said: View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

“The point is that I felt it was time to do the right thing, to put Nigeria first and appreciate the efforts that have been made, particularly in the last couple of years in terms of security; fighting insurgency and terrorism.

“It is not always negative and when the time is right, we change direction to join forces and join hands to move the country forward.”

FFK’s defection is among the top-trending news in the country today and will likely remain so in the coming days. It is so because of the manner he behaved while in the opposing camping.

FFK’s frequent defections elicit some questions. What indeed drives the maverick politician? What are his principles and ideals? What guides his decision about the party to belong? Must opposition politicians play politics in bad taste?
