ClickNews 1d

One thing that football has never lacked is great goalscorers, and if I might even say, scoring goals is the essence of football. You might play the most beautiful football, but if you don't score goals and win trophies, no one cares.

From Ferenc Puskas, to Pele, to Gerd Muller, to Ronaldo Nazario, to Ibrahimovic, to Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Lewandowski, there has always been spectacular goalscorers in every generation of football, and now we have Haaland and Mbappe leading the new generation.

So what really makes a goal great? There have been people who scored from their own half, people who scored from corners, people who took freekicks that whirled twice in the air, people who scored acrobatic kicks that defied the laws of physics, and many more types of goals and goalscorers.

That being said, this article brings to you a compilation of 10 of the best and greatest goals that have ever been scored in the history of the game.

Sit back and relax, as we begin the show.

10. Roberto Carlos

Roberto Carlos is famous for many things, but the beautiful goals he scored are what we would remember him for in the ages to come.

His freekick goal against France in 1997 takes the number 10 spot on this list.

What makes that goal really special is how it dipped and curled in such an unpredictable manner that it seemed to defy the laws of physics.

The fact that he played the shot with his left foot only for it to curve rightwards makes the goal even more unbelievable. Nobody saw that goal coming, not the wall of players, the goalkeeper and maybe not even Carlos himself.

9. Rafael Van der Vaart

In the battle of scorpions kicks and back heel flicks, Van der Vaart emerges victorious.

Some people may argue that Giroud's, Mkhitaryan's or Ibrahimovic's scorpion kicks are better than his, but I tell you his back heel flick was special.

Not only was he being tightly marked when the ball came to him, it also looked like he had lost the ball only for him to pull off that outrageous kick and score the goal.

Watch Giroud's, Ibrahimovic's and Mkhi's scorpion kick goals here and then Van der Vaart's back heel goal here, and then pick your best.

8. Marco Van Basten

They are few goals that are sweeter that a thunderous volley, and Marco Van Basten showed us just how sweet a volley can look with his wicked strike against the Soviet Union in the 1988 Euros finals.

That goal was pitch-perfect, and the angle from which the shot was fired made it even more spectacular.

7. Lionel Messi

Messi has scored all kinds of goals, but his most memorable goal came in 2007 when he showed the world just how talented he was by dribbling right from midfield past 4 players to score.

I mean it is not everyday you get to see footballing magic like that.

6. Maradona

If Messi's goal gave Getafe players bad dreams, Maradona's strike against England in the 1986 World Cup gave the Englishmen nightmares.

Like Messi, he moved all the way from midfield to dribble past 4 players and calmly slot the ball home.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo

This list would not be complete if the arguably best goalscorer of the past 15 years is not here.

Ronaldo has scored many spectacular goals, but his 2017 bicycle kick goal against Juventus makes number 5 on this list.

I have seen many bicycle kick goals like Ibrahimovic's goal against England and Mauro Bressan's wicked bicycle kick goal, but the sheer athleticism that made Ronaldo's goal possible puts it at the top of all others.

Standing at 1.87 meters tall, at the moment Ronaldo's right foot hit the ball, it was 2.38 meters above the ground. That is around the height of the crossbar.

See Ibrahimovic's goal here, see Ronaldo's goal here, see Mauro Bressan's goal here. Which do you think is the best?

4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Of all Ibrahimovic's spectacular goals, his solo effort in 2004 while playing for Ajax is easily his best.

That goals was pure class, and he dribbled past five players who came to mark him to then score the goal.

What is even more interesting and undoubtedly special is that not only was his shoelace untied such that he had to tie it after scoring the goal, he also faked the camera into going the wrong way.

3. Dennis Bergkamp

We can't mention Premier League and Arsenal legends without chipping in Bergkamp's name.

The man was absolutely brilliant in his prime and showed that with his awesome goal against Newcastle in 2002.

So how did he score this much hyped and probably best EPL goal ever?

After receiving a pass from his teammate Pires, Bergkamp immediately flicked the ball with his left foot around his marker Dabizas, and then spinned around him to collect the ball and then calmly and coolly score.

Just watch the goal people, and you would agree with me that it is a sweet goal.

2. George Weah

Talking about goals which were built up from an awesome dribble, Messi's, Maradona's and Ibrahimovic's goals are all wonderful, but George Weah's goal in 1996 against Verona is the best of them all.

Why do I say that, let's look at the goal. He took the ball from his own 18 yard box after a poorly hit corner fell to him, and dribbled all the way to his opponents box to beat the keeper and score.

That goal showed why George Weah was good enough to win a Balon d'Or.

1. Roberto Carlos

Carlos started our list, and ironically also closes out the list with what is definitely a physics defying and astounding goal.

His freekick against France may have defied physics, but this goal he scored against Tenerife made physics seem like a joke.

I used to think that scoring from corners was the peak of awesome goals but after I watched this goal I changed my mind.

Let's break it down a bit, Carlos was running at full speed, and then at around the left corner hit a thunderous shot with his left foot only for it to curve unpredictably and find its way into the net.

I don't know about you, but goals like this are almost never seem in football.
