It's undoubtedly the tough time for Nigeria Police Force as the are being hunted following the called for the end to police brutality across the country. It would have been another story if the government as responded to public outcry about the force harassment, extortion and illegally arrest of Nigerians. Their silence and fake promises is what brought Nigeria of today where policemen lives are being threatened and they couldn't discharge their duty due to lack of trust by the general public.

According to IGP Adamu representative at a policy dialogue on policing organized by the House of Representatives to collate views on a bill to amend the Police Service Commission.

He said: "Going forward, there's a lot of confidence building mechanism that's being put in place to retrain the police to bring back confidence.
"Now a major problem is lack of confidence between the police and members of the public," the IGP explained.

Having said this, it's necessary for police to rebuild and gain public confidence and trust. To do this, the following must be done:

1. Policemen must stop discharging other law agencies duties.
There is at least one major reason that each government agency was created, but it's surprising when one agency leave it duty to take over others. This is exactly the case of Nigeria police who has taken over the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) work. Not only that, ordinary Nigerians can not also differentiate between NPF, NDLEA and EFCC duties. The policemen have turned themselves to all round agency.

2. Stop using force on innocent Nigerians.
The police major work is to protect lives and properties of Nigerians and to be friendly to the citizens, but due to ways Nigeria policemen handle cases and people, the supposed to be friends as turned to enemies.
This could be seen in our communities, especially the rural areas where people run and shut their doors at the sight of policemen.

3. Bail must truly be free.
The number way of showing that Nigeria police has been reformed, which will gain people trust and confidence is when bail in all the police stations is truly free.
Many people see policemen as people who must not be trusted, especially when the words "Bail is free" and "Police is your friend" are written on the wall, yet people are been brutalized and forced to pay for their release at their custody.
