Meet The 5 Governors That Left PDP To Help APC Win GEJ In 2015, See Their Political State Afterwards

BrightTVC 2d

The PDP, five influential governors, Admiral Murtala Nyako of the State of Adamawa, Aliyu Vamakkko of the State of Sokoto, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State and Engr Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso of the State of Kano, resigned from the party on 13 November 2013 and defeated All Progressive Conference, a merger faction that was newly formed as a PDP. In the general election of 2015, their dismissal, initially rejected by President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP's national leadership, played a leading role, especially during the APC Presidential elections when retired APC candidate General Muhammadu Buhari, and defeated President Goodluck Jonathan, PDP candidate.

G5 Governors

The PDP was the only winner in all past presidential elections since 1999 and had even boasted of ruleding the country for 60 consecutive years before the 2015 presidential election. Nevertheless, the 2015 APC elections loss ended the sixty-year governance program and gave the party the role of opposition. The election results also marked Nigeria's first time that a sitting president and a ruling party nominee will be defeated by an opposition party candidate at the presidential election.

Issues Before Their Defection

The 5 governors were locked up in an ongoing political battle with President Goodluck Jonathan and the national leading PDP led by Dr. Bamanga Tukur over their political interests in the PDP. They were accused of having played on President Jonathan's script in order to humiliate them and their loyalists in the governors Bamanga Tukur.

The G5 Governors with Jonathan

They also accused President Jonathan and Bamanga Tukur of illegally withdrawing their loyalists, delegates to the PDP convention held in August 2013, and of fraudulently manipulating the process to ensure that only candidates for different positions win their respective offices in an effort to brace President Jonathan for the 2015 elections.

Though each had different grievances, they saw President Jonathan and Bamanga Tukur as their mutual enemies and moved to an APC to promote the removal from office of the two men. Though they were successful, let's see through of them were successful.

1. Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano)

Although Rabiu Kwankwaso was entirely responsible for the PDP system in Kano State, his will to 'fight' President Jonathan was a result of a decision by the now former President to seek re-election for a second term as president despite an agreement with northern leaders in 2011.

Kwankwaso

According to Rabiu Kwankwaso, President Jonathan, who succeeded late President Umaru Musa Yar'adua in May 2010 before the 2011 presidential elections, reached an agreement with northern leaders to run for only four years that he is president until 29 May 2015. The compromise was that during 2015 he would not seek reelection, as the office would be zoned in the north for interested aspirants.

Kwankwaso, who was an aspirant to the presidency, was furious that the president rejected such an arrangement publicly. He was also angry when followers of President Jonathan began to lobby for a second vote for him in the PDP. He further argued that the Bamanga Tukur national PDP leadership's body language indicated that the party leadership already prepared for President Jonathan to run as the sole party candidate that annoyed him.

After his decision to leave the APC, Rabiu Kwankwaso was among four candidates for the new-party presidential nomination, which was secured by retired General Muhammadu Buhari in December 2014 at the Lagos Special Convention. He was later nominated for the APC Senate for Kano Central Senate District.

During the 2015 general election, Kwankwaso led the APC to a win in Kano by increasing all the positions available which were challenged by an outcry, including his own Senate triumph. He also gave the APC presidential nominee Muhammadu Buhari 1,9 million votes.

Political State Aftermath of 2015

Soon after the 2015 election, Kwankwaso was expelled as leader of the party in Kano State by APC's national leadership. The members of the Party were asked to refer Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the new leader, to the authority of his former deputy and successor. The Kano State Governor, who is also an APC supporter, Dr Ganduje, also dismissed Kwankwaso loyalists serving in his administration. Kwankwaso's loyalists were also excluded from the leadership structure of his Kano APC. He also experienced a relentless political battle with Dr Ganduje and APC leaders in Kano.

Despite of his dispute with APC, Kwankwaso withdrew from the APC in July 2018 and returned to the PDP. Upon defecting in the PDP, he attended the October 2018 PDP Special Convention seeking the party's presidential nomination but did not meet with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former vice-president of Nigeria. He is now the PDP 's political chief in the state of Kano.

2. Admiral Murtala Nyako (Adamawa)

Nyako

Admiral Nyako was a resolute opponent of President Jonathan and a critical. They were concerned with the decision by the former President to renounce his one-term deal and support for Bamanga Tukur to weaken him in the PDP's Adamawa state chapter. In 2013, he wrote a scathing letter to President Jonathan, inept in his handling of the Boko Haram insurgency, accusing him of purposely using the terrorists to destroy the people of the North.

Admiral Nyako, former chief of naval staff and leader of the defeated governors, was still angry after Bamanga Tukur disbanded a loyal PDP executive committee in Adamawa and named a guard committee to join him in running the Party's affairs in Adamawa. He was engaged in rivalry with Alhaji Tukur over PDP hegemony in the state of Adamawa. He was said to have been planning for his son, Abdulaziz Nyako, to succeed him after the end of his governorship in 2015. He quit the PDP for APC because of these political problems.

Upon his defection to the APC, he became the leader of the State Party and proceeded to challenge Jonathan. The PDP leadership could no longer tolerate its arrogance in July 2014 and endorsed the members of the House of Assembly (dominated by the party) to condemn Nyako.

Admiral Nyako 's son Abdulaziz Nyako, who was last to the general election in 2015, received an APC senatorial ticket and also received his loyalists nominations for the other elections from the party. He inspired the party to reclaim the government's headquarters and also won other election offices contested in the 2015 poll.

Political State Aftermath of 2015

Yet less than two years after the triumph of the APC, Admiral Nyako was locked in power tussle with his current former protector, who, in 2015, he almost alone, made Senator Jubrilla Bindow, the governor of APC in Adamawa. Not only did he lose control of the state party, he also lost control of his ward to Governor Bindow loyalists.

In June 2018 Admiral Nyako, his son and fellow fans quit APC for the newly formed African Democratic Congress, the ADC.

3. Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara)

Ahmed

Of the five governors who defeated PDP from APC, only Abdulfatah Ahmed has been in his first term in November 2013. His grouse with Chairman Jonathan was the result of his mentor, benefactor and predecessor Senator Bukola Saraki 's continuous investigation of the Federal Government Agency of Economic Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Governor Ahmed, a leading figure in the political dynasty of Saraki, saw the probe as a strategic step in embarrassing his principal and humiliating the dynasty. It was due to President Jonathan 's failure to ask the EFCC to stop his test of Senator Saraki that took Governor Ahmed and all Saraki 's members of the Kwara political caucus into the APC.

After joining the APC Ahmed was nominated for the 2015 governorship election, an election he won. Ahmed won the party. But shortly after the electoral victory, after he became Senate President, he began problems with the leaders of the APC because of the party's decision to fight Senator Saraki. Ahmed also failed the federal government on the basis of a decision made by President Muhammadu Buhari to take public misconduct against Senator Saraki before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Political State Aftermath of 2015

In July 2018, Ahmed accompanied Senator Saraki to the federal government to return to the PDP due to the ongoing 'pursuit' of the Saraki political caucus by the APC party. At the 2019 general election, he pursued and won the nomination of the PDP for Kwara Southern Senate. But he had to give up his senatorial ambition on Senator Saraki 's order.

4. Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto)

Wamakko was one of President Jonathan 's chief antagonists in deciding to run as a candidate for the 2015 elections contrary to the 2011 single-term agreement. The PDP national leadership validated the factional leadership of the PDP in Sokoto, and suspended it from the party indefinitely, because of its running battle with Jonathan.

Wamakko

After switching to the APC, Wamakko became the state leader of the APC and was given a ticket for the 2015 election to the Senate.

He led the party in winning all the state elections for the APC, including a senatorial seat during general elections in 2015, and moved after his term as governor to the Senate Chamber.

Political State Aftermath of 2015

Wamakko has been on the smooth journey with national party stakeholders since he joined the APC, retaining his position as leader of the APC in Sokoto state and is considered to be an influential party member in the northern region. In 2019, he won his second term as a senator for the party.

5. Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers)

Of those five governors, only Rotimi Amaechi from Rivers State was Southern Christian like President Jonathan, who abandoned the PDP to APC. According to Amaachi, his feud with President Jonathan was due to Jonathan 's decision to interfere with PDP and the country's political affairs, and undermine Jonathan 's wife Patience in the state of Rivers.

Amaechi

At the beginning of 2013, Amaechi was angered at President Jonathan's refusal to back up his second term as president of the Nigerian Governors' Forum. He was also angered that President Jonathan and Bamanga Tukur supported PDP Rivers State factional leadership, which removed him and Chief Sam Jaja, his loyalist and PDP deputy national president, from the PDP indefinitely. The party 's decision to expel Sam Jaja from office was also a key issue that increased its dissatisfaction with the leadership of the PDP.

Amid APC splits, Amaechi became the Party chief in the state and south south. He also served as Director General of the presidential campaign of the APC in 2015, but he could not win President Muhammadu Buhari nor any APC nominee.

Political State Aftermath of 2015

After the election of 2015, President Buhari appointed Rotimi Amaechi as the transport minister for his contribution to his victory. In 2019, he was named Director General of the presidential campaign in the APC and after the election victory, was reappointed Minister of Transport.

Amaechi is now struggling for his political life in the Rivers APC with Senator Magnus Abe, an archenemic faction. He also engaged in a hegemony struggle with Comrade Adams Oshiomole, National Chairman of the APC, for leadership of the south-south party. His loyalist, Chief Victor Giadom, was relieved from the position of APC National Working Committee as Deputy Secretary to the Group, while the faction loyal to Senator Magnus Abe, its archrival, was recognized as the authentic executive of the party in the State of Rivers.
