HOW IT ALL STARTED
Boko Haram gained widespread popularity in July 2009, after an incident in which the group had claimed that the Police used force on its members and decided to retaliate.
They launched their own attack on the Police force, killing scores of police in the process. When the police could not contain the situation, they involved the Nigerian military who took over the fight.

Yusuf and other leaders were arrested by the military and handed over to the police.
A few days later the corpses of Yusuf and his colleague were displayed in public; this in turn infuriated the group and they pledged to revenge through their new leader, Abubakar Shekau.

In 2010, Boko Haram began to assassinate its targets which were mostly police officers.
Oneof their early attacks which gained widespread attention was when they attacked a prison in Borno State and released about 700 inmates out of which about 100 were boko haram members.
Their terrorist attacks have continued since then primarily in Nigeria’s northeast, north-central, and central states and typically focused on police, military, and government targets, as well as Christian churches and schools and some Muslim individuals.
