Here are 12 journalists killed in Nigeria;

1. Enenche Akogwu

Kano based Channels Television journalist and cameraman, Enenche Akogwu was investigating Boko Haram terrorismd in the region when he was reportedly shot and killed by an unidentified armed man in January 2012. 

2. Alex Ogbu

On January 21, RegentAfrica Times magazine and website reporter, Alex Ogbu was allegedly murdered by men of the Nigerian police force in Abuja while covering a protest by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.

3. Precious Owolabi

Around July 2019, a young Channels TV journalist, Precious Owolabi, was killed in Abuja by a bullet while covering an Islamic Movement in Nigeria protest. No one has been brought to book for his murder.

4. Pelumi Onifade

Pelumi Onifade, a 20-year-old 200-level student of the Department of History, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ogun State, and was working as an intern with GboahTV

He was killed by some officers of the Nigerian police attached to the Lagos State Task Force, on October 24 2020, few days after capturing the moment when an APC politician shot at protesters in Lagos.

5. Ikechukwu Onubogu

In 2017, ‘unknown’ armed men shot and murdered Ikechukwu Onubogu, a staff (cameraman) with the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS). 

His body was found lifeless just four days after his family reported him missing.

In January 2020, Maxwell Nashan, a newscaster with Federal Radio Corporation (FRCN), was reportedly abducted and hacked to death few days to his wedding.

7. Edo Ugbagwu

42-year-old Edo Ugbagwu who was a court reporter with the Nation newspaper, was shot dead at his Lagos residence after some men broke in and started trading words with him. 

Like Nashan, no one could phantom why they were murdered in cold blood. 

8. Nathan Dabak & Sunday Gyang Bwede

On the same day Edo Ugbagwu was killed, Nathan Dabak, 36, and his colleague Sunday Gyang Bwede, 39, staff members of a Christian newspaper known as ‘the Light Bearer’, were stabbed to death enroute Jos.

9. Bayo Ohu

In 2009, 45-year-old Bayo Ohu, an assistant news editor with The Guardian, was attacked at his home by 6 assailants.

He was killed;  his laptop and cell phone were carted away according to his relatives.

10. Tunde Oladepo

Tunde Oladepo was a senior correspondent with The Guardian newspaper in Lagos. He was reportedly assassinated by 5 masked gunmen at his residence in the presence of his wife and children.

Nothing was stolen from Oladepo’s residence which ruled out robbery as a motive. He was covering political affairs before his murder.

11. Zakariya Isa

Zakariya Isa, 41, a reporter and cameraman with the NTA in Borno state, was gruesomely murdered by Boko Haram. The terrorists organization later claimed responsibility for his murder.
