Most Croatians have their surnames in patronymic derivation. A patronymic surname is a surname that is coined out from the first name of the father. Sometimes, it is derived from the profession of the father. Quite interesting right?

Lets see more examples.

Let us make us of Mateo Kovacic. (He plays as a midfielder for Chelsea.)

"Kovac" means blacksmith. So when add the suffix "ic", it means the son of a blacksmith.

Another name is Mornaric.

"Mornar" means sailor and when we add the suffix "ic", it means the son of a sailor.

This is how most of their names are gotten. The "ic" is a male diminutive suffix. Therefore, if you want to get the meaning of their names, just find the meaning of the word before the suffix "ic".
