Since July 22, 2018, the date of Chiyo Miyako’s death, the dean of humanity is the Japanese Kane Tanaka, born on January 2, 1903, and aged 117 years. The proven longevity record for women is currently held by Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who lived until the age of 122.
On the other hand, a new discovery on the African continent, the cradle of humanity, could completely upset this record of Jeanne Calment’s longevity. Indeed, Sarah Nwakohwu Wuche, born in 1883 in Nigeria and who lives in Obio Akpor LGA of Rivers State, would be 137 years old today.
It remains to be seen whether her birth certificate is authentic. And even if she doesn’t have one, scientists should investigate her case to determine her exact age and award her the trophy for the world’s oldest woman whom she claims.
