Education PS Belio Kipsang Speaks of The Fate of Remaining Classes After a Surge in COVID-19 Cases

For the past one week, Kenya has recorded a surge in covid-19 cases. On Wednesday October 14th, the country registered 604 positive cases of corona virus disease which is the highest number since August. This coming just a week after the reopening of schools for select classes and two weeks to the full reopening of all classes has put the fate of learners in a compromising position. On Monday while assessing the reopening of grade four, class eight and form four students, Education cabinet secretary prof George Magoha asked parents to prepare remaining classes to reopen in one or two weeks time.

However, following the recent increase in positive cases and deaths, Health cabinet administrative secretary Rashid Aman warned that the government might be forced to effect strict containment measures. Addressing the nation from Kenyatta National Hospital on Tuesday, CAS Rashid Aman stated that shutting down schools again, closing bars and other entertainment joints, ban on public gatherings and restriction of movement were some of the cards on the table going forward. He further revealed that the government will be monitoring the situation for the next few days or weeks then take the necessary action.

In light of this development, Education Principal secretary Belio Kipsang has come out to address fears among many parents on the safety of their children in schools and the fate of reopening for those still at home. Speaking in Baringo county while assessing the schools affected by floods, PS Belio Kipsang stated that the fate of those students still at home lies squarely with the covid-19 curve in the coming days or weeks. He noted that if the curve continues to rise, students yet to reopen will have to wait longer. He further revealed that if the curve falls to below 5% positivity rate as before, then they will recall those learners still at home back to school soon.

For those already in schools, the PS stated that they will continue learning as the government monitors the covid-19 situation. If things get out of hand then they will have no choice but to shut down the schools again. He called upon parents of grade four, class eight and form four learners who were yet to release their students back to school to do so. PS Belio Kipsang had visited the area to see how best to help learners from schools that had been submerged in water. He proposed a short term plan of having them learn from neighboring schools as the government deliberates on a long term solution.

The Director General in the Ministry of Health Dr. Patrick Amoth also came out to talk about the possibility of closing down schools if cases keep rising. Engaging Kenyans on social media through his usual Question and Answers session on Wednesday, the DG noted that utmost caution has to be taken at this time or else the country might be hit hard again with the corona virus pandemic. He also maintained that there was need for the Education sector to halt the reopening of remaining classes until when the positivity rate goes below 5% on a steady curve for a while.
