In Summary

  • The mobile phones’ shop attendant in Machakos was offered a hefty sum of cash by the terrorists but declined.
  • The trio had refreshed, taken breakfast and bought caps to conceal their faces.

When Musharaf Abdalla, Joseph Juma Odhiambo and Mohammed Ali Abikar escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison on November 15, they went to a mobile phone shop in Machakos town.

They bought two phones and SIM cards. But while attempting to register the SIM cards, they encountered their first real challenge beyond the prison walls.

The challenge was presented by the woman shop attendant who insisted on seeing their national Identity Cards to enable her register the SIM cards. “They pleaded with the attendant to facilitate them at a fee but the attendant was adamant that unless they produced their national identification documents, then no help would come their way,” says the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Kamiti Escapees’ Contacts

The sleuths says the terrorist trio intended to use the phones to establish “contact with their counterparts in the underworld.” It is believed that after escaping from Kamiti, they boarded a private car to Machakos town- some 74 kilometres away- where they refreshed, took breakfast and bought caps to conceal their faces, in readiness for the rest of their journey.

Their destination was Somalia, haven for Al Shabaab terrorists. From Machakos, they intended to travel to Garissa and eventually Somalia. The three were arrested at Enzio Forest in Kamuluyuni village, Mwingi East sub-County, Kitui.

The three were flown back to Kamiti amid tight security. “The decision to do what is right regardless of the incentive being offered demonstrated the attendant’s steadfastness,” says DCI. PHOTO/FILE

Their stark presence in a small hamlet where neighbours know one another prompted the residents to alert the authorities. Upon arrest, the trio was flown back to Kamiti Prison amid tight security.

“The attendant’s refusal to make illegal and illegitimate profit saved the country in a big way,” adds DCI. “The decision to do what is right regardless of the incentive being offered not only demonstrated the attendant’s steadfastness but also his fidelity to the law even when nobody was watching.”

Meanwhile, the National Police Service recently reassured Kenyans that those who aided in the arrest of the trio will receive the KSh60million cash reward as promised.
