The East African nation of Tanzania under President John Pombe Magufuli took a radically different approach to the Corona Virus pandemic. While other nations across the world preferred caution and went on full scale lock downs, Tanzanians continued with life usual.
President John Pombe Magufuli called for the country to avoid panic and stopped the announcement of Corona virus statistics in late April 2020. The last figures announced by the Tanzanian Ministry of Health put the Corona virus caseload at 480 with 21 deaths. A few days later, the semi autonomous island of Zanzibar declared 29 more deaths.

In June 2020, President Magufuli declared the country free of Corona virus. Schools reopened on June 29th 2020 as life went back to the pre Covid days under the leadership of Magufuli. The professional football league would resume a few weeks later.
The Tanzanian method of handling the Corona virus has brought diplomatic challenges to the country. A diplomatic spat ensued in mid 2020 with its northern neighbour Kenya after the country insisted on testing all arrivals from Tanzania at the Namanga border post. This was solved by Cabinet ministers from the two countries.
