Institutions of basic learning have been open for 2 weeks now. In person learning was resumed on 12th October 2020 after a 7-month long holiday due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first phase of reopening saw grade 4, class 8 and form 4 students report back to school. The rest of the learners had been speculated to report back to school by the 26th of this month according to multiple sources. However, the Ministry of Education had not given any formal communication on when the other classes will report back to school.
Education CS Professor George Magoha has however cleared the air on the reopening dates for grade 1-3, class 5-7 and form 1-3 students. Magoha, while he was at Malava Primary School yesterday, said that schools will not reopen on Monday as earlier speculated. He added that the government is still monitoring the situation in schools and if a consensus is reached on reopening dates, a formal communication will be made. "What the ministries of Health and Education together with the ministries of Interior are doing is continuously monitoring the progress of our children. We never gave any dates. What we said is that we are going to monitor how everything is going and we shall make the decision and the announcement will be made by the Ministry of Education in consultation with the Ministries of Health and Interior," CS Magoha.
His statement is good news to the rest of the classes because it removes the uncertainty that had been in place due to the speculations from multiple sources.
