The cabinet secretary for education Prof George Magoha allowed phased re-opening whereby grade four, class eight, and form four candidates were allowed to be in their respective schools. According to the daily nation, some schools within the country have been reported to have cases of corona virus infection. In rift valley region, two students were reported to have corona virus.
According to Billy Miya, a radio presenter from Radio Maisha confirmed that two schools in Mombasa County were closed down indefinitely after eleven teachers were confirmed positive of corona virus. These teachers belonged to star secondary school and a notice was given out informing learners to report back on 2nd November of this year.
In addition, teachers belonging to Tononoka schools tested positive for corona virus. The school has been closed and health practitioners have taken charge to evaluate the situation and perfom contact tracing for mass testing. If a teacher belonging to a certain school can test positive and has interacted with students, then there must be a higher chance that students are also infected by this dangerous disease. Schools were allowed to re-open when majority of them did not meet the ministry of health guidelines. The issue to do with social distancing cannot be effectively achieved in schools since learners are forgetful especially during break times and lunch hours. The positivity rate within the country now stands at around 12% from the previous 5% when schools were allowed to re-open.
I therefore, deem it not logic for the government to allow learners to be in school yet we still have high numbers of corona infection. In my opinion, the cabinet secretary for education professor George Magoha should close down all schools by next week.
