Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs in Kenya are amongst the most celebrated village security personnel for their outstanding control and solving of village matters. They are permanent Government workers and therefore are paid by the Government.

Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs play important roles in their respective working places such settling disputes, informing members of the public of Government's projects,solving petty disputes amongst the villagers and also codifying customary law.

1. An individual must possess Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade of C or its approved equivalent with grade C in English or Kiswahili.
2. One must be a resident of the respective location or sub location he/she needs the Chief or Assistant Chief's roles
3. An individual must be thirty five years old of age and above.
4. One must also be in possession of good communication skills.

The basic salary of a newly recruited chief without experience ranges between Ksh 30,000 and below while that of an experienced Chief ranges between Ksh 30,000 and Ksh 60,000.
On the other hand,an experienced assistant chief's basic takes home a monthly salary of between Ksh 25,000 and Ksh 45,000.
The highest paid chief earns Ksh 70,000 in a single month.
