As more grades have been given the go-ahead to return to school 18 pupils in Nyanga High School of the Eastern Cape have tested positive for coronavirus.

Nyanga High School is situated in Ngcobo and is heralded as one of the best rural boarding schools in the country. Yet even it's prestige could not protect it from Covid-19 infiltration.

Following the schools first Covid-19 case on the 15th of June the school invited the Eastern Department of Health to contact trace and test suspected students on the 16th of June.

The Eastern Cape Department of Health workers found 30 pupils who had symptoms and those who had come in close proximity to the first initial Covid-19 case.

The 30 pupils were then tested and 17 were found to be positive for Covid-19. The only saving grace was that this occurred in a boarding school and thus containment was relatively easy.

If such an event occurred in a normal school the cases could of tripled leading to possible hospitalization and even death. Yet, the Basic Education Department and its Minister Angie Motshekga continue to say its safe for students to return to school.
