Motshekga Opens While 700 Teachers Have Covid-19 In Western Cape

The department of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga continues with the plan to open all Grades in school and special schools, but teachers Union says she must reconsider her decision. The rate of infection in schools is on the increase between learners and teachers.

The Western Cape province which has been identified as the epicenter is struggling to control infections in school. Over 700 Teachers have been reported to test positive to Covid-19, and 90 learners are also positive in the province. This shocking stats have been revealed by the MEC for Basic Education in the province Debbie Schafer.

The problem with the current situation is the department has not met all regulations, so if all Grades are introduced this will result in a disaster. The cases in Western Cape is just a tip of an ice bag, many provinces are running short of testing equipment. In Limpopo province Cosas has already given the provincial department an ultimatum to supply personal protective equipment and sanitizers or else close schools. In Western Cape the only solution will be to close schools.
