Good news for MTN users
The mobile network MTN and Competition Commission have agreed on reducing data prices, the commission said that the agreement has been finalized and data prices will be reduced. According to the agreement, MTN will reduce the data price for 30 day prepaid bundles across networks and will also implement the market price decrease across all its market channels in order to connect these reductions to all network partners and to smear these reductions across all MTN networks. This comes after the commission’s data services market review, the commission said that ‘‘its resulting findings and recommendations as well as discussions between the commission and MTN”.
MTN will offer its clients a daily free capped data bundle, off its customers topped capped zero-rated entrance to certain public benefit administrations and further websites , substance to a maximum 500 websites concentrating on education, health care and job employment through MTN’s own website which will apply to terms and conditions.
Mobile network registers that it implemented the daily support set in respect to the Ayoba chat, media and networks functionalities on March 2020 and was to introduce the Ayoba browser functionality on the 1st of June 2020. MTN commenced to permit all its customers to manage their data custom via MTN USSD and through MTN’s website with no cost apply.
The commission’s review resulted from determined concerns about the deceptive high data prices in the country and the significant of data affordability for customers and the economy in overall. The commission has announced its last report last year December after discovering that data prices in South Africa are very expensive. MTN stated that ‘’It noted several recommendations relevant to the consent agreement which it subsequently concluded with MTN”.
The endorsements were related to price levels which involve prepaid monthly bundles, data bundles, price discernment plans that poorly affect lower income customers, a lifeline set for all prepaid subscribers and zero cost of some content amongst other recommendations
