Close to 500,000 people have lost their lives. While confimed cases and deaths are falling in some countries, figures are increasing rapidly in others.

In South Africa 5,688 cases and 103 COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the past 24 hours this bring the number of confirmed cases and deaths to 111,796 and 2,205 respectively. The country is among the nation's where cases has exceeded 100,000 mark exactly 110 days after the first case was reported.

According to the statement released by the department of health, the 103 new deaths were reported in the Eastern Cape 15, Gauteng 25 and Western Cape 63.

The Western Cape now has 49.3% of the total reported cases in the country standing at 55,162. Gauteng has 26,156 and the Eastern Cape 19,214. The number of tests conducted stands at 1,416,894.

The department added that the number of recoveries now stood at 56,874 which translated to a recovery rate of 50.9%. 

Provincial breakdown of confirmed positive cases is shown below.

Western Cape: 55,162

Eastern Cape: 19,214

KwaZulu-Natal: 6,075
