Sizwe Motaung was one of the best right backs of his generation. He had the world at his feet and had played for three of South Africa's biggest clubs. He married Zodwa Khoza, Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza's daugther. At the tender age of 31 his life was cut short because of illness. He spent his last days at his family's home in Newcastle.

Born in Newcastle, KwaZulu Natal, Motaung started his youth career at Chippa's Dynamos. He was scouted at Durban Leeds United by Jomo Sono, who offered him his first professional contract at Jomo Cosmos. He played for Cosmos from 1991 to 1993, until he made the a move north to Pretoria. He went on to play for Mamelodi Sundowns from 1994 to 1996, his next move was to Europe. His time with Sundowns they finished runners-up in the 1994 BP Top Eight (MTN 8) and 1994/95 National Soccer League (Absa Premiership) runners up.

In 1996 Motaung signed with Swiss Super League team FC St Gallen where he made 15 appearances in his time at the club. He , David Nyathi and Phil Malinga played at St Gallen at that time. In 1997 he moved to Spanish La Liga team CD Tenerife where he played 13 games. He also represented Tenerife in Uefa Europa League.After 2 seasons in Europe he returned to the Absa Premiership.

In 1998 Motaung signed for Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs. He featured regularly for Chiefs. And in his time at the Glamour Boys the team ended 1998/99 Absa Premiership season as runners-up. In 1999 Bob Save Super Bowl runners-up to Supersport United who won 2-1, the following year Kaizer Chiefs would capture the prize. As they were crowned winners of the 2000 Bob Save Super Bowl, when they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the final.

In 2000/01 season Motaung signed with another Soweto giant Orlando Pirates. He helped the Buccaneers win the the 2000/01 Absa Premiership title as well as the 2000 BP Top Eight when they beat Ajax Cape Town 2-1 in the final. And runners up to the 2000 Rothmans Cup when Ajax Cape Town beat Orlando Pirates 4-1.

Motaung also represented South Africa at international level between 1992 and 1997. He was part of that first Bafana Bafana team that played its first international after isolation in 1992. He made 51 appearances for Bafana Bafana and was also part of the 1996 African Cup of Nations tournament on home soil.

In August 2001 Motaung passed on from an unknown illness he battled with for a couple of months. Cosmos owner Sono organized a benefit game to raise funds for Motaung's medical bills.
