MEC Lesufi confirms 176 schools are affected by Covid-19

On Thursday, Panyaza Lesufi, who is the MEC of the Gauteng said 176 schools in the Gauteng province are affected by Covid-19. He said the department is working diligently to ensure that the schools that are affected can re-open. Within the affected schools, 188 teachers and 58 learners have tested positive for Covid-19.
The province of Gauteng currently has 95% of schools that are operating. The department received almost 1000 applications from educators asking to teach from home. Most of these applications came from people who have co-morbidities. Additionally, 500 learners also made applications. Many of the applications came from Ekurhuleni South.
The MEC said that from the 6th of July 2020 1.3 million learners were expected to return to school. The plan is to implement a timetable that is rotational for different grades to attend on different days. Learners who are attending schools are being screened at the school entrance, wearing masks, and using hand sanitizers.
