Congress of South African Students (Cosas) raised concerns on the rapid infections of learners and educators at schools. Considering that schools are ready to receive a significant number of learners next week.

It's been 3 weeks since Grade 7 and 12 learners phased in the reopening of schools.

So far the Eastern Cape province is leading with infection cases in schools. It is unsettling for parents to send more learners back to school, while safety seems to be the biggest challenge for DBE.

Cosas proposes scrapping off the mid-year exams due to time constraints. Teboho Magafane, Secretary-General of Cosas stated that there should be a balance on the academic and the safety of learners.

He further mentioned that Cosas has been engaging in meetings with the Department of Basic Education. Follow up meetings with Minister Angie Motshekga for the outcome of proposed pressing matters. Magafane says Cosas is convinced that it is safe for learners to go back to school. However, he emphasized that DBE should ensure safety measures are exercised for the sake of learners.
