A 22 year old suspect has been arrested following an incident that took place in the Haenertsburg policing area outside Tzaneen in Limpopo.

The Limpopo provincial spokesman Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the Intelligence led joint operation comprised of the Crime Intelligence Unit, the Saps Mankweng Crime prevention and the Mankweng Cluster Task Team made the major breakthrough

Ngoepe said it is alleged that on the 14 June 2020 at about 20:00, the suspect broke into a house belonging to an elderly man (60) and threatened him with a firearm before demanding money and subsequently robbed him of his bank cards and car keys.

"He tied the victim and loaded him inside the car boot and drove off," said Ngoepe.

Ngoepe said the police were notified after the victim's family became aware of the ordeal and reacted swiftly.

"The police investigations with the assistance from the car tracker company managed to trace the vehicle at Mentz, Ga-Mamabolo in the Mankweng policing area outside Polokwane and arrested the suspect.

He said preliminary police investigations revealed that the suspect drove around Mankweng, Polokwane and Lebowakgomo areas with the victim still inside the boot and withdrawing the victim's money.

"The ongoing police investigations have also linked the suspect with five other cases of house robbery, house breaking, theft, assault and theft of motor vehicle committed in and around the Haenertsburg area between January and June 2020.

Ngoepe said in the process, the police recovered a toy gun, motor vehicle and other stolen items.h

According to Ngoepe, the suspect may be linked to more similar cases across the province as the police investigations are still unfolding and he is scheduled to appear before various magistrate courts soon.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Major General Jan Scheepers has commended all members of the South African Police Service who were involved in this well coordinated operation on the job well done.
