2010 Nigeria nightmare. Where did it go wrong.

It's been 10 years Nigeria got eliminated from 2010 World Cup.

What exactly went wrong, Yakubu's big miss or the whole team fucked it up?.

Over the years Nigeria had always gone to the World Cup with the Coach that made them qualify.

But it was different in the 2010 World Cup.

Amodu Shaibu made them qualify but was sacked after third place in the Africa Cup of Nation in February.

Lars Lagerback, a former Sweden National team Coach was given a Five month deal to take the Country to the World Cup.

The Coach played a Friendly match against Colombia and Saudi Arabia with both ended in draw.

They later won a Friendly match against North Korea by 3 goals to 1 before going to the Tournament.

Nigeria went to the World Cup with a Positive Mindset but lost the first match against Argentina.

Messi had a dramatic display and Enyeama, the Nigeria Keeper shone by having numerous save against Messi.

Without Mikel in the tournament, the defense maintained their shape and Enyeama became the wall.

Gabriel Heinze only goal in the 6th minutes was the only goal the side which made Nigeria lose the Points needed.

Second match against Greece

Nigeria needed the win in the Second Match.

Te Super Eagles took an early lead from a set-piece, Kalu Uche – in for Obasi – whipping a low free-kick inside the far post.

Many Nigerians would have thought Nigeria would have an easy win against the team that have never win any World Cup match.

Suprisingly, Greece won their first match against Nigeria.

Like an hour later, Kaita, who to that point had struggled in possession, tussled with Vasilis Torosidis by the touchline as the ball rolled out of play.

Incredibly, he then proceeded to kick out unprovoked, delivering a glancing stamp to the Greek defender's thigh.

He was shown straight red card by the referee and knelt down in disappointment.

Then Greece took the advantage very well by turning the one goal lead to one goal decifit for Nigeria.

This left the Super Eagles almost hopeless.

There was actually still hope in the final game only if Nigeria would win against South Korea and Greece would lose to Argentina.

The Final Saga:Yakubu's Miss

Nigerians awaited the slim chance we had to get us to the next round but hope of many Nigerians were shattered that night.

However, Nigeria got a chance in the 66th minute that the Super Eagles will probably never forget.

The Miss

On the end of a pass from Ayila Yussuf that was fed through the South Korean defense was none other than Yakubu Aiyegbeni, who was one of the most accomplished players in Nigerian international football history.

He is the highest goalscorer for Nigeria and a star player for Everton of the English Premier League.

As the pass found Yakubu's foot about four yards away from the empty goal, Yakubu pushed the ball wide of the left post to keep South Korea ahead 2-1.

The missed chance has been buried in the heart of many Nigerians since.

In the history of the tournament, that might have been the biggest missed chance.

Few minutes later, Yakubu got Penalty to score Penalty and he scored it to make the scorline 2-2.

The fans was kept waiting for the third goal to come but no goal came.

The game ended 2-2 which led the team out of the Tournament.

Meanwhile, in the other game in the group.Argentina defeated Greece which had given Nigeria an open opportunity but slipped away.

Though before the tournament, Nigeria had issues about the squad, Mikel even missed out.

Eight days following Yakubu's miss, Nigerian football was given another major shock.

President Goodluck Jonathan announced that the national team was going to be suspended for two years

This was due to widespread corruption that existed within the Nigerian Football Federation.

But the later was later reverted though.

Do you think Yakubu miss was the main thing that affected the team after losing their first two matches or The squad and coach changed affected the team.

Even with the anything affecting, Can you ever forget this goal missed by Yakubu?

How did you react after the match that night?....

Yakubu wasn't the problem of the team and he redeemed his image by scoring a penalty for Nigeria in the same match..The team generally is not good... It's the worst team that represented Nigeria at the world cup after Onigbindes 2002 team.
