Is Reincarnation Real or a Myth?

Idyyleo 2d

Natural life is cyclical. Day fades into night and turns back into day as the sun rises, one season gradually gives way to the next. Is reincarnation just the same as time and seasons?

When I was young, during the holidays, the whole family usually spend some time in the village with our grandpa (our grandma was late). There was this particular girl our grandpa loved so much. He kept saying that the girl reminded him of his wife, that it was his wife that came back to life in form of the little girl. Since we were young, we did not really understand what he meant.

Growing up to hear similar stories from other people even friends has made me wonder if reincarnation really does exist.

What then is Reincarnation?

Reincarnation also called transmigration or metempsychosis, is the concept that the soul, or some aspect of the soul is reborn into new lives. Depending on the religion or philosophy, the soul can appear, incarnate in humans, animals or plants as it works its way toward an eventual escape from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

What Scientist say about Reincarnation.

While many scientists will dispel the notion of reincarnation as a myth, there are some credible experts who believe that it is a genuine phenomenon. Reincarnation is generally a religious concept that implies that upon a select few’s deaths, their soul, mind or conscious is transferred to a new born. It sounds like the stuff of fantasy, but some scientists do believe that it is a feasible concept.

Dr Ian Stevenson, former Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and former chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology, dedicated the majority of his career to finding evidence of reincarnation, until his death in 2007.

Dr Stevenson claims to have found over 3,000 examples of reincarnation during his time which he shared with the scientific community.

In a study titled ‘Birthmarks and Birth Defects Corresponding to Wounds on Deceased Persons’, Dr Stevenson used facial recognition to analyse similarities between the claimant and their alleged prior incarnation, while also studying birth marks.

He wrote in his study: “About 35 per cent of children who claim to remember previous lives have birthmarks and/or birth defects that they (or adult informants) attribute to wounds on a person whose life the child remembers.

What then does the Bible say about Reincarnation?

The whole thrust of the Bible opposes reincarnation. It shows that man is the special creation of God, created in God’s image with both a material body and an immaterial soul and spirit. He is presented as distinct and unique from all other creatures—angels and the animal kingdom alike.

The Bible teaches that at death, while man’s body is mortal, decays and returns to dust, his soul and spirit continue on either in a place of torments for those who reject Christ or in paradise (heaven) in God’s presence for those who have trusted in the Savior. Both categories of people will be resurrected, one to eternal judgment and the other to eternal life with a glorified body (John 5:25-29). The emphatic statement of the Bible that “it is appointed unto men once to die and after that the judgment” (Heb. 9:27) spells out that once a man dies he does not come back to live in another form.

How do we now explain the fact that we do have this feeling that a member of our family that once died came back to life in form of another new baby?

The Bible has made it points clear, yes and I think we have to live with it.
