Hey there, I am a new blogger who is learning cornerstones of blogging every day. And search engine optimization is one of the big cheese of the blogging spectrum. It can be puzzling for newbies as there is no single line rule to master it. You only understand it with tweaks and turns. In a broader sense, it’s like an instrument that you can learn and become virtuoso with practice. So what is SEO and what are its types, let’s find out in this article.

What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of optimizing your content so that it appears on SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).

The glaring benefit of powerful SEO is higher ranking on search engines which in turn generates lucrative visitors. To understand it further let’s look at its different subdivisions.

Search engine optimization is basically classified into 3 types:

• On-page SEO

• Off-page SEO

• Technical SEO

Okay, now we will dig deep into these terminologies to understand the SEO techniques.

On-page SEO

The optimization techniques carried on the page of your website to rank your post higher on search engines fall under this umbrella. On-site SEO or On-page SEO covers proper keyword stuffing, image optimization, adding meta description, high-quality content, and organized content structure with proper text formatting. On-page SEO techniques are also powered by site speed and usage of meta tags that help search engine bots to catch your content. On top of that, the inclusion of URLs and internal linking are also some of the factors of on-site SEO.

On-page SEO factors

Site Speed

In this world of cutting-edge technology, every second count and people often avoid the website which takes even a second longer to load. In fact, many articles reveal that delayed loading time scales down the conversion rate by 7%.

You can check your website loading speed at Google Page Speed Insights.

If your website speed turns to be below par you can employ certain techniques like choosing a better hosting service, minifying CSS, JavaScript or HTML codes, and compressing images to boost up the loading speed.

Crawalability

It can be a setback to SEO if your webpage is not discovered, scrawled, or indexed by search engines. You need to check the robot.txt file of your website to nullify the crawl errors and identify the pages which have been mistakenly blocked by Google bots.

The Google Webmaster tool can help you identify the crawl errors.

Mobile Responsivenes

Millions of people surf the internet using a mobile device that includes smartphones and tablets. Hence it is important that your website is mobile-friendly. While the content should be the same on desktop and mobile platforms you should manage the minute errors such as intrusive popups or small texts that are harder to read to optimize your website for mobile.

Content Tags

The title tag to your content plays a crucial role in on-site SEO. A catchy title can draw a lot of eyeballs to your webpage. You have to make sure to place your primary keywords close to the title of the content for powerful SEO. An accurate meta description is also an important factor that can boost up the on-site SEO. It should be blended with your targeted keywords that concise with the idea of the content. Besides the title, there are several other formatting available such as subheadings or minor headings.

Multimedia

Pictures speak a million words. Hence, it is important to incorporate infographics in the form of images and videos in your content. This is a crucial step to keep your readers engaged and curb the bounce rate. However, multimedia must be optimized to meet the requirements of SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) with an accurate stuffing of keywords in video description and image alt text.

Keyword Research and Stuffing

It is the key step for unpaid ranking on search result pages. On-site SEO is primarily powered by keyword research and stuffing. There are a plethora of tools available for keyword research. Make sure to pick the bunch of long-tail keywords with adequate volume and low search difficulty.

Content length

Google adores rich and detailed content. As content is the king make sure your article is both immersive and long. But do not compromise with quality for the quantity. The ideal length of your content should be 1500-2000 words.

Also, the content should be easy to read. The readability must be lower than 7 when checked in Hemingway Editor.

Off-page SEO

Off-site SEO or off-page SEO includes the optimization techniques you employ outside the webpage. It includes the techniques that align with external rank factors such as building links from other trusted websites. The other off-page SEO activities are related to social media marketing and collecting reviews on different forums.

Off-page SEO factors

Domain Authority (DA)

It is a search engine ranking score that predicts how well your website will rank on search engine result pages. The score range is marked from 0 to 100 with higher the number more the chances of ranking. In simpler terms, domain authority represents the quality of the website. The scoring scale depends on multiple factors such as backlinks. If your website is redirected from another website with higher DA then rankings on SERPs elevate.

You can check your website DA on Moz Domain Analysis.

Relevant Backlinks

Backlinks are the cornerstone of off-page SEO. They are classified into two types do-follow links and no-follow links.

Do follow link is meant to pop up the webpage rank on SERPs. It allows Google bots to pass link juice or link value to the webpage that is linked with. For example, if an e-commerce website with higher DA provides a do-follow backlink to another similar website with lower DA then it means that the former is giving its value to the later. And hence the rankings will improve for the website with lower DA.

The no-follow backlink is meant to stop web spam. It has no role in ranking and Google bots do not follow or pass link juice.

Irrelevant backlinks can hamper your website ranking and sometimes can trigger de-ranking as well. So, you should make sure to get relevant backlinks from trusted websites.

Social Networking

Social media hosts millions of users which can be converted to visitors of your websites with effective networking. This also boosts the off-page SEO which in turn can proffer better rankings on SERPs. You can share your website links on different platforms to draw a huge influx of traffic. But make sure not to overdo this process as it might surge the spam score of your website.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO primarily aims at proper indexing and allows Google bots to successfully crawl and recognize your web pages. Some of the techniques involved under this umbrella are creating a sitemap, optimizing your site for mobile devices and include structured data.
