1.Tramadol fuels insurgency in North-East, says NDLEA boss

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Muhammad Abdallah , says tramadol is a major catalyst for insurgency in the North -East.

He noted that drug abuse increased during the lockdown occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic, adding that it is the country ’s ‘real pandemic’.

Abdallah stated this on Thursday while featuring on Channels Television ahead of this year ’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking scheduled for June 26 with the theme , ‘ Better Knowledge for Better Care'.

He said , of the abused psychoactive substances by Nigerian youths, the consumption of tramadol is more worrisome.

The NDLEA boss said, “ The Government of India has up its ante; they have now put more control on the supply of tramadol to Nigeria.

He said there was the need for collaborative efforts by all including parents to stem the tide of drug abuse in the country , saying , “ I know we are going through a pandemic universally but the real pandemic to us is the drug pandemic. ”

He added that the government has taken some steps to address the challenge of manpower confronting the agency , saying , “ On the part of the government , it has taken some steps to ameliorate some of the deficiencies of the agency. For a start, Mr President has authorised an upgrade on the staff strength of the agency.

2. Police take over APC National Secretariat, stop secretary from entering office

The National Secretary of the Senator Ajimobi- led National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress, Waziri Bulama, was among those prevented from entering the National Secretariat of the party.

Bulama, who arrived at the Secretariat about 10 : 50 am in a black Toyota Land Cruiser Sports Utility Vehicle with registration number Abuja, Abj - 140DN , was stopped at the gate by armed policemen on duty.

3.BREAKING :Nigeria faces worst recession in 40 years – World Bank

The collapse in crude oil prices , coupled with the COVID -19 pandemic , is expected to “ plunge the Nigerian economy into a severe recession, the worst since the 1980 s ”, the World Bank said on Thursday.

The World Bank , in a new report , titled ‘ Nigeria in times of COVID -19 : Laying foundations for a strong recovery , ’ estimated that Nigeria ’s economy would likely contract by 3. 2 per cent this year.

The bank said if the spread of the virus became more severe , the economy could contract further.

According to the report , with the drop in oil prices, government revenues are expected to fall from an already low eight per cent of GDP in 2019 to a projected five per cent in 2020.

The Country Director for Nigeria , World Bank , Shubham Chaudhuri , said, “ While the long -term economic impact of the global pandemic is uncertain, the effectiveness of the government ’ s response is important to determine the speed , quality , and sustainability of Nigeria ’s economic recover

4.Court orders forfeiture of N250m diverted from NDDC

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered that a sum of N 250 m allegedly diverted from the Niger Delta Development Commission should be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The court, in a ruling on Wednesday by Justice Rilwan Aikawa , made the interim forfeiture order.

The order followed an ex parte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The Head of Media and Publicity at the EFCC , Dele Oyewale , said in a statement on Thursday that Justice Aikawa granted the prayers in the ex parte application following argument by the commission ’ s counsel , Usman Buhari.

5.Breaking: APC NEC dissolves National Working Committee

The National Executive Committee, NEC, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has dissolved the National Working Committee, NWC of the party.

NEC has also appointed the Yobe State Governor, Mai Malla Buni as the Chairman, Caretaker /Convention Committee Governor Buni, who was the former Secretary of the APC was sworn-in by the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

President Muhammadu Buhari at the NEC advised that all litigations in the party should stop.
