There are strong indications that Victor Giadom who has been endorsed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the Acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) may not recognize Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the authentic APC candidate for the forthcoming Governorship election in Edo State.
Recall that last week while he was addressing a news conference at the headquarters of the APC in Abuja, following the controversial removal of Adams Oshiomhole by an Appeal Court, Giadom declared that the decision of the screening committee on the Edo Governorship primary was cancelled.
In his first speech as the Acting National Chairman he lampooned Oshiomhole for instigating confusion in the party. According to him, “it is against the law of natural justice for the suspended chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole to have presided over the screening exercise in the Edo Governorship primary when he is an interested party.” View pictures in App save up to 80% data. He therefore called on all aspirants to report for a fresh screening between. But the screening did not hold because of the controversies that surrounded his emergence as party chairman. Instead of holding a fresh screening as he commanded, a faction of the party went ahead to organize a Primary in election in Edo State, which later produced Ize-Iyamu as the substantive candidate of the party ahead of the Governorship election in September.
But now that the President has put to rest the controversies’ that surrounded the party leadership in Abuja, there are fears that Giadom may not back down on his earlier proclamation and may insist that a fresh screening be held. Meanwhile, as doubts over Ize-Iyamu’s position as party candidate in Edo State Election lingers, Giadom has convened a virtual meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC). He said the virtual NEC meeting which would hold on June 25 at 12pm, is in strict compliance to COVID-19 guidelines.
The party is expected to clarify the uncertainties surrounding the Edo election during the meeting which will be attended by President Muhammadu Buhari.
