Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has highlighted some of the reasons why the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) was formed in 1978. This body was inaugurated when he was a military president , agreeing that it was one of the best decision in his tenure.

Obasanjo responded to questions in an interview with JAMB as released on its report from 29th June to 5th July ,2020.

Recollect that the JAMB Act (No. 2 of 1978) was inaugurated during the military tenure of Olusegun Obasanjo in 1978.

The ex-president emphasised that the board was established to perform an important role in presiding over admission into tertiary institutions in the Nigeria.

He was qouted as saying: "Well, at that time that you are talking about, we had universities.A lot of people had applications to different universities and polytechnicsThis became a problem for these institutions.

“As such, we needed to assist both the institutions and the candidates to moderate applications and admissions,” he added.

Obasanjo also stressed that the idea of JAMB was also to allow candidates to select their course of study.

Furthermore, he revealed that if not for JAMB, higher institutions would have not been improved.

“We wanted the admissions to be in order so candidates may choose any institutions of hi or her choice. And also make choice of the programmes they want to study and then have a central board that would moderate, coordinate and ensure that the students get quality education.
