Since we have been consuming equity for health and vitality generations, how else can we explain the choice of wheat to pounded yam? The prevalence of wheat consumption in the country clearly showed that, in the absence of knowledge, people would handle poison. After all, wheat flour is the first choice food for diabetics, based on doctors' guidelines.
Nationally, wheat overshadowed our Nigerian culinary community's yam meal and other starchy foods. Sadly, this is a dietary change that can prove suicidal for many people given the indissoluble link between food and health or fitness.
While wheat is rich in fiber and some other nutrients, like other grains, it is one food that should be kept at arm's length for everyone seeking wellness and long life. Why? Why not? What's for? Wheat chemistry has three inherent dangers that make it a classic destroyer of health.
3 Health Dangers of Eating Wheat Flour
1. Wheat contains a gluten-a protein that induces inflammation, a systemic process that has negative effects on the organ systems of the body including the brain, heart, joints, eyes, and digestive tract. Inflammation not only precedes all degenerative diseases like diabetes, cancer, stroke, glaucoma, arthritis, and Parkinson's disease, but it also fuels their insidious development. A review paper in the New England Journal of Medicine identified 55 diseases that may result from gluten-containing foods. Osteoporosis, anemia, cancer, cancer sores, exhaustion, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis are among the disorders.
Gluten was also associated with other neurological and psychological conditions including depression, schizophrenia, dementia, nerve damage, epilepsy, and autism. The paper concluded that there are 120 or more diseases related to the consumption of foods containing gluten. Dr. Joseph A. Murray, MD, says he is shocked by the ease with which gluten affects the brain.
2. Glycemic Index is a metric that tests foods high in carbohydrates by how much they raise blood sugar levels compared to foods with low glycemic content. Wheat has a GI of 71, compared to yam and sweet potato with GI of 49 and 54 respectively. Eating high GI food like wheat continuously causes weight gain daily, which makes diabetes intractable.
3. Wheat is an acid-forming food: acid-forming foods reduce the body 's pH and deplete oxygen levels in cells and tissues, which are the primary cause of all diseases. In other words, if wheat causes low pH causing illness, wheat intake and its products are equal to adding fuel to fire for people dealing with one or the other health problem.
4. The other harmful effects of wheat flour consumption are that it increases cholesterol levels, clogs the arteries, disrupts blood sugar levels, causes mood swings and irritability, and increases your cravings for more food. This also induces fatty liver, hypertension and atherosclerosis.
While foods made from wheat flour are detrimental to health, they are addictive and can not be easily given up. They should only be consumed rarely and in moderation. Always, make sure your diet is healthy with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which have all the nutrients you need. You may also turn to whole wheat flour for a healthier diet instead of the processed ones. A type of exercise is also required, such as cycling, which should be done for at least 30-40 minutes a day.
