Ghana pledges to Rebuild Nigeria’s High Commission Building to its Original State.

The Government of Ghana, on Thursday 25th June 2020 promised to rebuild the residential building of the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana that was demolished a few days ago following an attack.

You would recall that residential building of Nigeria's high Commission in Ghana, which was still under construction was pulled down by armed men who stormed the area on Friday night.

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mrs Shirley Ayokor Botchewey made the above statement while speaking with newsmen on the outcome of the investigations carried out as regards the incident.

In her words:

"The Land Commission will formerly inform the Osu Traditional Council that in August, 2000, offer was made to High Commission of Nigeria, irrespective of the title of land in question.

“The offer was accepted by the High Commission and payment was made accordingly that constituted a contract"

She further stated that the agency in charge of Lands will issue a Land ownership certificate to Nigeria's High Commission in the country to further regularize its property ownership of the land in question.

She added that a committee comprising of personnel of Ghana Ministry of Foreign Affairs,operatives of Police Service, National Security, and Agency in charge of land had been organized to investigate the unlawful pulling down of the building.

She said that preliminary investigation had revealed that Nigeria purchased the Land in question 20 years ago even though Nigeria's High Commission could not provide the document, land title certificate and building permit of the property.

She however reassured that the Government of Ghana would cooperate with Nigerian government to find a long lasting solution to the issue that has caused a lot of tension between the two countries.

She also said that arrest has been made in connection to the incident and they have been charged to court on issues bordering on 'conspiracy to crime and cause of unlawful damages'.
