Since the inaugural UEFA Champions League edition in 1992, a host of players have notched more than a goal in a game. Scoring a goal, let alone a hat-trick in the Champions League is a special moment for any player, as only a few players have experienced to do so.

To score a hat-trick in at the highest level of European club football is rare but two players, Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano have scored five goals in a single UEFA Champions League game.

5 Mario Gomez (2011/12)

Germany and VfB Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez has been one of Germany's most consistent strikers in the past decade. He has played for three German clubs, in Italy and in Turkey and is a very experienced footballer.

Gomez began his career at Stuttgart and after six strong seasons at the club and a Bundesliga title to his name, Gomez moved to German giants Bayern Munich and spent the next four years of his career with the Bavarian giants.

During the 2011-12 Champions League season, Bayern Munich finished runners-up as they lost to Chelsea on penalties at the Allianz Arena. He also notched three hattricks in the same campaign for the club in the group stages against all three opponents in the group. The German scored 12 goals in the 2011-12 Champions League, and finished behind Messi for the golden boot.

4 Ruud van Nistelrooy

Slightly ahead of Lewandowski courtesy of his goals-per-game record is former Manchester United poacher Ruud van Nistelrooy, who hit 56 Champions League goals in just 73 appearances throughout his career.

Despite playing for four European Cup winning clubs, Van Nistelrooy would never get his hands on the famed trophy, though he could do little more during his time at Old Trafford.

In his five seasons playing for Sir Alex Ferguson, Van Nistelrooy would finish as the tournament’s top scorer on three occasions, defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the 2001/02 semi-final the closest he would come to the biggest stage.

Few forwards have ever been as clinical and opportunistic as the Dutchman, whose goals per game ratio is only second to Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi amongst the highest scorers in the Champions League.

3 Lionel Messi

Messi began the season as he intended to go on, scoring three goals as Barcelona beat Madrid 5-4 across a thrilling, two-legged Supercopa de España contest. The first, bustling past the muscular and aggressive Pepe before rolling the ball under Iker Casillas’ dive, earned a 2-2 draw at the Bernabéu. In the return fixture, Messi first latched on to a Gerard Piqué backheel and chipped over Casillas in trademark fashion, before lashing home a triumphant volley to settle the tie late on.

From that point on, it felt as though records fell almost weekly. Over the course of the season Messi usurped the great Hungarian forward László Kubala to become Barcelona ‘s second-highest scorer in competitive games, then becoming top dog outright in March, surpassing César Rodríguez Álvarez, with his 233rd strike, coming via the first goal of a hat-trick against Granada at the Camp Nou.

Messi also became the first player in the Champions League era to score five goals in a single game, thanks to his haul in a 7-1 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen. In October he scored the fastest hat-trick in club history, his treble against Mallorca completed in just 17 minutes.

2 Cristiano Ronaldo

We said the top five was mighty tough to rank and choosing a number one was nigh on impossible.

But how could it not be this ridiculous goal scoring accomplishment?!

Many thought the concept of 15 goals by one player in a single Champions League campaign was outrageous, but Ronaldo did just that and added two more on top for good measure.

He is the only man to reach the 15-goal mark in the competition and he's now done it on three separate occasions, including four goals in finals!

Cristiano Ronaldo's extraordinary goalscoring exploits rightly get the attention they deserve, and his strike-rate in the Champions League is nothing short of breathtaking.

With 128 goals (and counting) to his name, he is the tournament's all-time leading scorer, but how has he gone about his business in Europe's premier club competition? In this regularly updated analysis, we delve into the numbers behind his success:

Last updated 12/12/19 (after Bayer Leverkusen vs Juventus on matchday 6) Ronaldo reached double figures in terms of Champions League goals for seven consecutive seasons between 2011/12 and 2017/18.

His most prolific season was 2013/14, when his 17 goals helped Real Madrid achieve ‘La Decima’. This stands as the most goals scored by a single player in a single Champions League campaign.
