A lot of Nigerians would recall the monthlong Coronavirus lockdown between April and May with dread. It was a time of endless night for a lot of Nigerian households. It crippled economic activities. Millions of Nigerians were retrenched from work and only a lucky few who could work remotely were not affected.

The federal government may consider another lockdown in light of the record-breaking daily numbers of Coronavirus cases in Nigeria. This was hinted by the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha during a presser at the presidential villa on Monday.

Boss Mustapha who doubles as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) said that the proposed lockdown this time would be different. The lockdown will only affect 18 local government areas in what is dubbed "precision lockdown".

Boss Mustapha said that Nigeria has not reached its peak yet hence, all stakeholders are advised to comply with all non-pharmaceutical interventions.

There is no denying that most of the 18 local government areas will be in Lagos given that Lagos is the epicenter of the Coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria. Punch discloses that according to data earlier released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, 11 out of the 20 local government areas that account for 60 per cent of the cases are in Lagos State.

We understand the reason behind this proposed lockdown. Many people had already foreseen that the government may likely enforce another lockdown. Given the economic hardship that comes along with lockdowns, is this lockdown advised?

We do believe that the proposed lockdown is necessary. However, in other to make it worth the while, the government must do more than lockdown. Like it is done in other countries, stimulus packages must be given to people and/or palliatives so as to cushion the effects of the lockdown.
