The Chairman of the Progressive Governors' Forum, Atiku Bagudu, said on Friday that the National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress ruling did nothing wrong by dissolving the National Working Committee of the Party and by setting up a caretaker committee.
He said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who is the leader of the party, would never do anything contrary to the provisions of the party's constitution. At a meeting held in the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, the NWC was dissolved and the Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Bunu, set up a caretaker committee.
Yet 18 leaders of the disbanded NWC loyal to the party's ousted national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, maintained that the NEC meeting in which the decision was taken was unconstitutional. They said they had consulted their lawyers and other stakeholders on dissolution and other decisions taken at the meeting.
After leading APC governors on a "thank you" visit to Buhari at the Presidential Villa , Abuja, on Friday, Bagudu insisted that the President had received due legal advice before taking a position on the crisis that rocked the party.
When asked for his opinion on those reported to be considering legal action on the matter, the governor of Kebbi State said, "There are a lot of things in the media.
“Remember that before the 2019 primaries, the President showed everyone in this country that he would never sacrifice the due process for expediency.
"Even though it was possible to expand the term of office of the then executive in such a way that we will not have a convention and a primary at the same time, Mr. President said 'no, no matter how difficult it is, we are going to will the right legal thing.'
Bagudu said that he was in the Presidential Villa with Buni; the President of the Nigerian Governors' Forum and the Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi; a member of the Caretaker and Extraordinary National Convention Committee representing the North Central and Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello; and the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to thank Buhari for all that he has done for the country and the party.
