Why Governor Godwin Obaseki Emerged Victorious

BaywoodTides 06/25/2020

As the People Democratic Party, PDP in Edo State holds her primary election today at the Samuel Ogbemudia International stadium in Benin City, pundits have already seen a victorious Governor Godwin Obaseki, as the 2,229 delegates cleared for the election, filed to the ballot boxes to cast their votes for their preferred candidates.

The pundits are making the claims because of these factors:

Being the governor of Edo State is one main reason the Peoples Democratic Party, both at the State and National level, admitted the embattled governor into their fold less than a week after he walked away from his former party, the All Progressives Congress, APC after he was unceremoniously screened out from participating in the party's Governorship primary election over alleged certificates alterations. The PDP as a party are bent on securing Edo State from the APC which they lost to since 2007, when the All Progressives Congress, APC took the mantle of the State under the ebullient leadership of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. The position of the Governor of Edo State commands power, power that is large enough to win any election in the State, especially now that the Governorship elections in Edo State will be held on the 19th of September, 2020. The tides seems to favour Governor Godwin Obaseki in this wise because, many of those APC stalwarts and fellowers that made the pilgrimage of decamping with him from the All Progressives Congress, APC to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP are already automatic delegates for the Edo PDP Governorship primary election, ongoing at the Samuel Ogbemudia International stadium in Benin City. The move by the governor, is one of the most insidious political calculations in recent time any dogged and determined politician had ever done, and for Governor Godwin Obaseki to have planned ahead of his peers, especially his fellow PDP Governorship aspirants who are jostling for the PDP Governorship ticket as the party has commenced the election in the early hours of today. The 14 House of Assembly members, the 21 local government chairmen and almost all the councillors in the State that decamped from the APC with Governor Godwin Obaseki, are automatic delegates for the PDP Edo Governorship primary election ongoing at the Ogbemudia International stadium in Benin City. Following the unfair and unjust manner which Governor Godwin Obaseki was humiliated from APC, due to his unscrupulous disqualification to participate in the party's Governorship primary election on the ground that his certificates has some discrepancies in terms of name alterations, governor's fan base has increased tremendously. People from all walks of life, and from different part of the country, have began to clamour for the end to godfatherism in Nigeria politics, following the role played by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole that led to the disqualification of Governor Godwin Obaseki from partaking in the APC governorship primary election, which forced the governor to dump the APC for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP last week prior to today's PDP Governorship primary election. The strong fellowership of Governor Godwin Obaseki in recent days by many people both in Edo State and Nigeria at large, is a reminder that Nigerians are fed up with the dictates of godfathers in Nigeria politics, people who will wake up one morning and begin to pull stunts anytime they want with their supposed political godsons. The case of Senator Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his political godson Mr Akinwumi Ambode is a clear reminder of the caprices of godfathers, who meant not well for the masses but for their selfish interests. The name Obaseki is an age-long traditional name in Edo history. The tales and deeds of the Obasekis have spanned the centuries even before the advent of the Europeans on the shores and doors of the ancient bini kingdom. It is sometimes said in Benin City that, in every gathering of ten persons, two is from the Obasekis lineage, and one out of five is an Obaseki in Edo State. Not surprising, the clout and mouth of Governor Godwin Obaseki runs to and from every nook and corner of Edo State to the extent that, there is virtually no sector in Edo State and Nigeria, that the Obasekis don't have a formidable representative. With such spread, it takes a miracle like the one that happened in Bayelsa State, where the winner of the Governorship election, Chief David Lyon and his deputy Senator Degi Biobarakuma Eremienyo were disqualified from being inaugurated as governor and deputy governor respectively, because Senator Degi Biobarakuma Eremienyo had discrepancies in his certificates that borders on forgery; to prevent Governor Godwin Obaseki from clinching today's PDP Governorship ticket and from emerging the winner of the Edo gubernatorial election schedule for September 19th, 2020. This headline is a no-brainer. Obaseki won because he had no opposition, period.
