Before the recent records of Covid-19 cases in the country, the President of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari had declared the ease of lockdown and maintained the closure of schools, while worship centres and financial institutions have been reopened.

Despite all the fight against Covid-19 by the government, it is disheartening that NCDC continually gives records of new cases of the disease.

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria has now exceeded 22,000 as, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 649 new cases on Wednesday.

The 649 new cases of COVID-19 were reported as follows; Lagos-250, Oyo-100, Plateau-40, Delta-40, Abia-28, Kaduna-27, Ogun-22, Edo-20, Akwa Ibom-18, Kwara-17, FCT-17, Enugu-14, Niger-13, Adamawa-13, Bayelsa-7, Osun-6, Bauchi-6, Anambra-4, Gombe-3, Sokoto-2, Imo-1, Kano-1

Till date, 22,020 cases have been confirmed, 7,613 cases have been discharged and 542 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

These daily records of Covid-19 cases, have been the main reason behind the delay in school resumption. However, it is good to hear that the Federal Government, has rolled out conditions that Schools and other learning Institutions must meet before they reopen, amid the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

The conditions, which are contained in a 36-page document titled: "Guidelines for Schools and Learning Facilities Reopening After Covid-19 Pandemic Closure", have been submitted to the Senate, by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.

As school children wait hopefully for school resumption, all Primary and Nursery school pupils should take note of this.

It could be recalled that the federal government had earlier disclosed that, it would soon unveil the policy for safe reopening of schools, saying it’s also weighing the option of running two classes in the morning and afternoon in secondary schools to enable students make up for lost grounds".

In sync with this, Nursery and Primary school pupils ought not to be ignored here. The government should consider resuming morning classes for pupils. These children have been at home for almost four months now; even if it means conducting only morning classes for them, while they maintain all Covid-19 preventive measures, it will be well appreciated.

Memorably, during the inauguration of the National Economic Council (NEC) for 2019-2023 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in the year, 2019, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari reemphasized the impact of the first nine years of a child's schooling, which encompasses Nursery 1-3 and Primary 1-6.

His words, "It is indeed a crime for any parent to keep his child out of school for this period..."

"Ensuring proper education during the first nine years of schooling means that our children start off their lives with some discipline and education".

"They will be safeguarded from roaming the streets, and protected from all the evil influences that assail idle hands and idle minds," he said

Following the above statement, the government should consider, creating room for the resumption of morning classes for primary and nursery school pupils.
