It is against this background that it becomes necessary to reflect, during such occasion, on the person of John the Baptist.

The dimension of this reflective write-up is on the comparison between John the Baptist and The Blessed Virgin Mary in the mission of Christ. Outstandingly, it concerns their place as direct instruments and witnesses to the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.

A) Point of convergence:

On the one hand, John the Baptist is well known as the forerunner of Christ. The scripture in Matthew 3:3 says: "This was the man spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said: A voice of one that cries in the desert, 'Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight'."

On the other hand, The Blessed Virgin Mary is the mother of the Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ. She conceived and bore the Son Jesus as the Angel foretold. This is in reference to the Gospel of Luke 1:30-31, which says: "but the angel said to her, 'Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God's favour. Look! You are to conceive in your womb and bear a Son, and you must name Him Jesus."

B) Point of divergence:

John the Baptist came to a point where he became confused of his mission of testifying about Jesus Christ, even after he must have seen and Baptist Jesus Christ. This is made clear in Luke 7:18-19, which reads: "The disciples of John gave him all this news, and John, summoning two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord to ask, 'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?'"

Meanwhile, the Blessed Virgin Mary followed Jesus Christ, with unflinching faith and courage, through His passion and death. In relation to the aforementioned, the scripture in John 19:26 says: "Seeing His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing near her, Jesus said to His mother, 'Woman, this is your son'."

Finally, apart from our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, John the Baptist and our Blessed Virgin Mary are the only two persons that their Nativity or Birthday is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church. As such, we really need to honour and celebrate this great man.
