The Federal Government has said that there is no fixed date yet, for schools to resume in the country despite President Muhammadu Buhari's announcement on a gradual ease of the lockdown on democracy day.

Following the ease of lockdown and setting up guidelines by the government, the Chairman of PTF on Covid-19, and Secretary to the Federal Government, Boss Mustapha had earlier advised that, the government can only put in place guidelines, but individuals have to take ownership of the guidelines to stay alive.

He further expressed the need to live by Covid-19 saying, "basically, what the officials are doing is the much government can do. People have the responsibility to stay alive. If beaches are open and other facilities are open, you have to take personal responsibility to wear your mask, maintain social distancing, wash your hands, and avoid physical contact and put sanitizers. The responsibility is not for officials, but those stepping out of their houses". We have gotten to the stage that every Nigeria must take responsibility, take ownership of how he or she navigates, the entire process to stay alive and survive it.

As regards to school resumption, the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba had earlier assured Nigerian students that all hands are on deck to reopen schools at a safe time and urged states, local governments, proprietors and other stakeholders to begin to take steps that would facilitate an early and safe reopening.

In sync with this, the federal government had earlier disclosed that it would soon unveil the policy for safe reopening of schools, saying it’s also weighing the option of running two classes in the morning and afternoon in secondary schools to enable students make up for lost grounds.

The Federal Ministry of Education Should Take Note of This.

This is the time for every citizen to take responsibility of his or her life as Covid-19 is on persistent increase. If morning classes for students would not be feasible by the government, the ministry should consider conducting afternoon classes for Secondary School students, from JSS 1 to SS3.

Students have been at home for almost four months now; hence, ministry of education should make the move in encouraging afternoon classes for students, even as they take the responsibility of staying safe by keeping all Covid-19 preventive measures.
