From Being the Best Team in England to Being a Mid-Table Team, What Went Wrong At Arsenal?

Larzzy 06/25/2020

There is no way Arsenal F.C. would not be listed when talking about the greatest clubs in England. Arsenal's story is more or less an illustration of moving from 'grass to grace', and then moving again from 'grace to grass'.

The club went from being the best team in England to being a mid-table team. What could have gone wrong at Arsenal?

Although Arsenal has always been a highly ambitious club ever since it won promotion to the top division in 1904, the club has always been battling with financial problems.

The club later had a breakthrough in achieving success after the appointment of the late Herbert Chapman as the club's manager. He helped the club win its first trophy by winning the FA Cup.

Another manager who had a very significant impact on the club's development was George Graham. Arsenal won their first-ever league cup in his first season at the club.

Graham didn't end his Arsenal tenure in good terms as he was accused of collecting illegal payments from agents to sign certain players to the club.

After Graham was sacked in 1955, the manager called up to replace him was also sacked a year after. This led Arsenal to the golden tenure.

Arsene Wenger's tenure is largely considered as the turning point in Arsenal's history. His tenure saw Arsenal being crowned as the giants of England, the best team in England.

In Wenger's second year in charge, Arsenal won their second league and cup double. Players like Thierry Henry and Patrick Viera rose to fame during this era.

The greatest and unmatched record by the Arsenal side occurred in the 2003/04 season. The club won the league title without any defeat, hence giving the squad the nickname 'The Invincibles'. Arsenal also won the FA Cup the following year.

In the 2005/06 season, Arsenal became the only London based club in 50 years to reach the Champions League final. But what happened to the club after the 2005/06 season?

Arsenal moved from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium, a move that was highly anticipated by fans. This move signified the beginning of the fall of the club.

Arsenal used loaned funds to construct the Emirates Stadium. They needed to repay their debt which saw the team started selling its best players in a bid to cover its debt.

Ever since then, Arsenal has faced a massive decline. In recent years, the club even declined further from being a top-four club to being a mid-table team.

What really went wrong at Arsenal?

Poor management decisions led to the fall of the Arsenal team. The management ran faster than their shadows when they started the construction of the Emirates Stadium.

It seems like they had projected the club to regularly win trophies each year so they can use the money earned to fund the repayment of the loan used to build the Emirates Stadium.

But when these expectations could not be met, the club started to sell out their key players to fund the repayment of the loan.

The Emirates Stadium may be considered as one of Arsenal's greatest achievements, but at the same time, the construction of the Emirates Stadium is responsible for Arsenal's drop from the best team in England to being a mid-table team.

Currently, Arsenal has completed the repayment of the loan money, but the deed has already been done.

Assuming Arsenal had not been forced to sell players to repay loans, it's possible the club would still be soaring very high like it is supposed to be.

I miss the Highbury Arsenal.
