Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
It is a group of lung diseases that block airflow and cause the lungs to become inflamed leading to difficulty in breathing.
Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the most common illness that make up COPD. When the lungs are damaged by COPD,it cannot be cured it can only be managed.
The other causes of COPD include, asthma,sarcoidosis,lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension and cystic fibrosis.
The risk factors are having allergies,being overweight, smoking, people who have asthma,being excessively exposed to pollutants or exposure to second hand smoke and family history.
It is very common in Nigeria about 1.6 million cases are reported yearly.
The symptoms include, chronic cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing up mucus, tightness of the chest, frequent respiratory infections, weight loss, lack of energy and swelling in ankles,feet or legs.
People with COPD also experience symptoms called exacerbations in which the symptoms become worse than usual and can last for several days.
It can be prevented by regular exercises, healthy diet, regular check-ups, avoidance of smoking or second hand smoke and reduction of exposure to pollutants.
