I have read on some news platforms that FG has presented a proposal on modalities for reopening of schools nationwide to the National Assembly. I would say that it is a step in the right direction as parents and various stakeholders have been mounting pressure since last month after the announcement for the easing of lockdown.

Although the federal minister for education has categorically stated that education sector can move forward despite the pandemic if all stake holders fashion out effective ways that will not contribute to the spike in Covid-19 infection.

I understand the FG fears over possible spread of the Corona Virus if Schools are given the go ahead to reopen. But then, we just have to move on as a country. What is needed is introduction of strict guidelines to enable educational institutions reopen while government set up monitoring teams to ensure the guidelines are implemented to the letter.

I will advise that let there be a phase by phase reopening, starting with Tertiary institutions then gradually extend it to secondary and primary schools.

The following reasons are why it is necessary to reopen schools as soon as possible.

1. Government Teachers are Receiving their Salaries while private school teachers are suffering because payment of salaries during lockdown is not sustainable to private schools.

2. The proposed Online Class/tutorial are not effective owing to issues such as poor internet service, epileptic power etc..

3. Public examinations has been affected badly as students waiting to write WAEC and NECO are left hanging.

4. Most schools are yet to conclude their second term academic activities and the year is gradually wounding up.

5. The Covid-19 is not as deadly as it seems if proper and quality health care is made available to all Nigerians. Emphasis should be placed on quality and affordable health care for all Nigerians.
