Major Actors That Will Aid the Fall of the APC

Kolapopson 06/25/2020

The country's ruling political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is presently on the verge of crashing, and like the case of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which lost its power woefully to the APC in the 2015 general elections, the ruling party may soon be brought to its knees, and some major actors, both within and outside the party circle, will be highly instrumental to this. These major actors and their intending roles, knowingly or unknowingly, in bringing down the APC shall be looked into by this writer.

Topping the list of these major actors that will aid the fall of the APC, especially in the next general elections, is President Muhammadu Buhari. Mr. President's nonchalant attitude to solving his party's internal disputes is the first contributing factor that may see to the fall of the party. Since he assumed office as the country's President in 2015, Buhari's response to the internal issues of the party has been unimpressive. As the country's president, he is automatically a leader of his party, and it is expected that he commands respect from all. However, the reverse seems to be the case always right from May 29 2015 when he was sworn in.

President Buhari

Another way President Buhari may contribute to the fall of the APC has to do with the people's expectations of him and his scorecard as Nigeria's president since 2015. Recall that prior to his being elected, many believed so much in his personality, his zero tolerance towards corruption, his ability to secure the country and the people against insurgency, terrorism or state of anarchy, which the country was witnessing at the time. Indeed, many voted and canvassed votes for him on this basis. A pertinent question that one may want to ask is that, has President Buhari lived up to these expectations? Has he been able to tackle the insecurity in the country to a reasonable end? Is he faring better in the fight against corruption? Has he performed better than his predecessors? If the answers to these questions are not in the affirmative, then it will contribute to the fall of his party, as the masses will likely frown at the APC, platform that brought him in.

Another personality that will likely aid the fall of the APC in the next general elections is the former Lagos State Governor and the party's National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Of truth, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has secured a prominent place for himself in the political history of Nigeria, and he has continued to remain relevant in the country's political sphere. He played a prominent role in the defeat of the PDP in 2015 general election and the emergence of the APC as the ruling party. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu led a mission for the coming together of three political parties, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to form APC which is now the ruling party.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu's political interest has always been countered by some influential members of the party who are probably intimidated by his political dexterity. Also, there are some influential party members who are ever loyal to Tinubu and his interest. So, right from day one, the APC already has two conflicting groups, the pro-Tinubu and anti-Tinubu, within the party. While the pro-Tinubu group will always push for anything in favour of the perceived loyalists of Tinubu in the party, the other conflicting group remains adamant in antagonising Tinubu's perceived loyalists always. This mean that Ahmed Bola Tinubu has become a phenomenon whose personality is responsible for the division in the APC. If this is allowed to continue for a long time, it may actually lead to the collapse of the party.

Also, there are insinuations that Bola Tinubu is aiming the position of the number one citizen of the country in 2023, and this explains the hullabaloo going on presently in the APC, especially regarding the leadership battle the party is experiencing. From the suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomole, a known Tinubu's loyalist, as the party's National Chairman, to the naming of the immediate past governor of Oyo State, Senator Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi as the Acting National Chairman, Chief Victor Giadom and others laying claim to the chairmanship position, the trouble emerged just because of Tinubu and his insinuated political ambition in 2023. So, if Bola Ahmed Tinubu decides to pursue his 2023 presidential ambition by all means, then APC is bound to be crashed, as many within the party will stand firmly against it. Also, if he decides to pursue his ambition on another platform, the APC will go down, as many of his loyalists in the party are ready to go with him to any party of his choice.

Another person that can aid the fall of the APC in the next general elections is the former president, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Going by the activities of the APC led government since 2015, many have come to the conclusion that former President Jonathan was misjudged by the electorates who opted for President Buhari instead of him in the 2015 presidential election. Some now argue that Goodluck Jonathan is better than President Buhari in all aspects and are willing to give the former president a second chance at any slight opportunity. One of the reasons Goodluck Jonathan was voted against in 2015 was that he was allegedly corruption friendly, whilst President Buhari was seen as an anti-corruption crusader. But today, many argue that President Buhari APC led government is even more corrupt than that of former President Jonathan. Also, the insecurity problem that the county was battling with when Jonathan was the president was another negative campaign point that the APC used against him and his party, PDP then. However, today many argue that the insecurity situation of the country is even more worrisome now.

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan

Another noteworthy thing about Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was the fact that he conceded defeat as an incumbent president, even against the advice from some powerful members of his party, and willingly handed over power to President Buhari, This has further endeared him to many who believe that it is only a genius that can do such especially in this part of the world called Nigeria. So, if PDP or any strong political party decides to use him as its presidential flag-bearer in 2023 against any APC candidate, the masses will likely give him sympathy votes that will lead to the defeat of the APC.

The suspended National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole, is another actor whose personality will aid the fall of the party. Right from the day he assumed the chairmanship position of the party, many have considered him too arrogant and dictatorial regarding the party's activities. Of truth, Adams Oshiommole as the APC National Chairman, had been instrumental to many of the election victories of the party. Recently, Bola Tinubu was quoted to have described him thus: "He has been a tireless campaigner and mobilizer for the party. He has steered the party through difficult elections. His contributions should not be undervalued now that the bulk of elections are behind us. To do so would be an act of ingratitude."

Comrade Adams Oshiomole

However, now that Adams Oshiomole has been suspended as the party's National Chairman, it is expected that he will do everything within his power to prove to all that he was the best, and so, he is likely going to see to the fall of the APC, especially now that the one laying claim to the position of the National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Giadom, isn't his loyalist.
