After the painful defeat of the PDP in the presidential election to APC in 2015, it was obvious that the hitherto ruling party had fallen down the precipice of power to the doldrums of a scandalous defeat. The PDP which was once reputed as the albatross of African democracy had being reduced to the ruins and would thus be termed the 'opposition', a nomenclature, they were not quite used to. Few would have wondered uf this powerful party would ever be able to jostle power from the APC.

But, fortune seems to be smiling at the party as the myriad of events bedeviling the APC is giving the erstwhile ruling party the impetus to build its ailing reputation and once more attain it's enviable status as the ruling party in the Nigerian political scene.

The setting for this seeming resurgence is Edo State where the political duel between the iincumbent Governor, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki and his former principal cum National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, eventually turned to be a pyrrhic victory for the latter. The disqualification of the Governor via a kangaroo screening committee led by Prof. Jonathan Ayuba led to the eventual move of His Excellency to theP PDPand in a twist of events, the ouster of the National Chairman by a ruling from the Appeal Court upholding his suspension paved way for the current imbroglio confronting the ruling party.

Although, the movement of the Governor to the PDP was fraught with several challenges stemming from the seeming displeasure of other aspirants who were equally nursing varying ambitions for the gubernatorial position of the state. In their view, they saw his coming as a divisive approach aimed at halting their aspirations. However, several party chieftains within the PDP see the emergence of Obaseki as a strategy to reclaim the entire South-South geopolitical zone.

With his coming, one of the aspirants Engr. Godwin Ikhine aptly stepped down for the incumbent Governor. However, another aspirant, Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, had earlier filed a suit challenging the right of the party in granting Obaseki a waiver. An ex parte motion was eventually instituted, barring the incumbent from participating in the gubernatorial primary.

Recent reports just emanating from the PDP's secretarial currently show that the litigant, Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, had withdrawn the suit and also stepped down his gubernatorial bid. This event, according to party stalwarts is a symbol heralding the likely resurgence of PDP at the governorship polls. With this development, some other obvious signs are now pointing to the PDP's victory in the governorship position.

1. Hon. Ogbeide Ihama's out of court settlement with the party.

With the timely compromise of the legislator, most party faithfuls see Hon. Ogbeide-Ihama's selfless desire to see victory of his party at the polls than his own ambition as a sure sign of victory at the polls in september. This epitomises true party allegiance and may just be the defining factor for the PDP at the polls.

2. The seeming unity of the party is a sure sign of the desire to ensure victory at the polls for the PDP.

The unity of both party chieftains and stalwarts within the state and beyond is yet another sign that proves that the PDP is resolute at actualizing victory at the polls, come september 19th.

3. The 'family' approach in settling intra-party conflict.

The PDP may have provided a model as to how party disputes are effectively managed. From the aforementioned instance, Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama obviously exhibited an honourable action by heeding the call of party members. This again proves the concerted effort by all members of the party to clinch the Governorship position in the state.

This piece represents the opinion of an observer and the hope is that political parties adopt this approach as a pragmatic solution towards mitigating party conflict and also an ethical way of articulating ways aimed at actualizing victory at the polls.
