All the filming took place in Mexico. The jungle scenes were shot just outside of the city of catemaco and the pyramid city was built in Veracruz. The making of the film was really was really stressful for some of the actors, because they had to learn Yucatec Maya. The birth Scene in the movie is not real, mostly due to the fact that that the movie takes place before any of these things ever existed, thus why the birth Scene is so realistic, with the raw stream of blood, along with the still intact umbilical cord, a little too much for some people to believe it's not real.
