The current Barca captain shared the dressing room with Riquelme at Camp Nou.
Minguella revealed that Leo's career was impacted upon by his fellow Argentine.
He also added that the playmaker was shy at the early stages of his career.
Lionel Messi's first agent Josep Minguella has revealed that the attacker looked up to Juan Riquelme during his youth days at Barcelona.
Sometimes Leo would come around for a barbecue and I remember one time when Riquelme, Rochemback, Motta and some other players came, and I could still see Messi sitting at the bottom of the table looking at Riquelme as if he were Jesus Christ.
"For him, Riquelme was his great idol, he was left-footed and played in the number 10 position in Barcelona's first team.
"However, Leo would only look at him because he was very shy, you had to force words out of him."
Riquelme represented Barcelona between 2002 and 2003 where he had the chance to play with a young Messi.
The 42-year-old ex-attacking midfielder bagged six goals and nine assists for the Blaugrana in 42 appearances during his Camp Nou stint.
He eventually left for Villareal in a deal worth €10 million on Aug 1, 2003, before returning to Argentina with Boca Juniors in 2007.
