Meet First professor of Medicine from university of Ibadan and JAMB first chairman.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation board(JAMB) made an announcement on the demise of its foundation chairman Professor Oladipo Olujumi Akinkugbe. This was announced through the weekly publication of the JAMB bulletin. He died on 15th June 2020 at 87 years.

Professor Oladipo Olujumi Akinkugbe was born on 17th July 1933 in Ondo state. He attended Ondo Boys High School in 1944. He had a great passion for science. After his secondary education, he gained admission into the University College Ibadan in 1951 to begin his study of medicine. After success in his medical examination in 1955, he was posted to University of London for his clinical studies. In 1958, he obtained his MBBS in London. He attended various medical institutions to extend his knowledge.

He was the first Professor of medicine from the University College Hospital, Ibadan in the year 1969. He was the Dean of medicine, University of Ibadan in the year 1970-1974. In 1973, he was a member of University Grants commission, Uganda government. He was a visiting professor of medicine, Harvard university and Senior Associate in Medicine, Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA in the year 1974-1975. He was also the foundation Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin in year 1975-1977. Within 1977-1979, he served as chairman JAMB board making him the first chairman of JAMB because the board was established in 1978. In 1978-1979, he was Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello university, Zaria. He was a visiting professor of Cardiovascular Medicine , and fellow of Balliol college, University of Oxford in 1981-1983. In 1986-1990, he was the Pro Chancellor University of Port Harcourt. In 1996, he was a rockfeller visiting fellow John Hopkins, Yale and Washington, Seattle Medical school. He was the chairman, University College Hospital Board, Ibadan in the year 2000-2003.

Professor Oladipo Olujumi Akinkugbe is a great man and a professional role model.
